Default Tata LPTA 713 4x4 truck as expidition vehicle.

I often see these trucks as part of the Eskom fleet. They look pretty capable and I would imagine that they won't be very expensive compared to other similar vehicle's. I am in the market for an expedition vehicle and would like to know what your thoughts are on this vehicle as a base? The LPTA 715 is the current newer model and I am struggling to find any info on the older 713 model. Anybody with any experience on these?

It would be my first option as well. I often see them on sale.

You can't beat the price. Engine is old school, proper solid axles.

Jelo, I have searched the forum and those vehicles have been mentioned twice only. Both occasions by you, seems like no one else know about them? Do you have any idea how much they are second hand? I never seem to find any for sale secondhand. Would you be comfortable travelling through Africa with it?

At one stage they were on sale just off Zambezi avenue at the N1 off ramp for R120k a pop.
But those deals are long gone.

Somebody reckoned around R250k which would still be a bargain for a base vehicle, compared to things like the Iveco.

    Engine spec:
    Make / Model TATA CUMMINS 6BTAA 5.9TC
    (Euro III)
    Capacity 5 883cc
    Layout Diesel inline 6
    Type Turbo intercooled
    Power kW @ r/min 115 @ 2 500
    Torque Nm @ r/min 590 @ 1 500

The Cummins 6BT is as strong as they come. Africa won't be an issue.

That is more than enough torque!

I waste a lot of my time watching YouTube videos on modern expedition vehicles. Usually based on modern trucks with Euro 5 and 6 specs which won't work in Africa. So I thought that I have to get an old truck which still is mechanically simple. But with the Tata you can have that as a new truck. But, is a new Tata better than an old Mercedes?

try find an old 3.5T Merc 4x4 that isn't shagged

6T and 8T maybe, but it seems the 3.5T is pretty rare

You'd need to buy something that is 40 years old

I use to have a Unimog 416.117 The extra long wheel base model. That could have worked well. Although the Unimog is slow, noisy and hot in the cabin.
