Default Lower Lotheni road from Nottingham raod to Sani Pass

    Afternoon

Anybody knows the condition of this road to Sani Pass from Nottingham road. Traveled it about two years ago. Very nice scenery and it was not bad then.

    Thanks

Did it this past weekend and it is a bit rougher than past trips I have done. In my opinion it is still better than the Boston/ Bulwer route if you are not in a hurry - As you, say scenery is amazing, and there little to no traffic, take it slow and relax....

I'm planning a road trip this December and would like to include Lower Lotheni Road BUT this time I'm leaving the 4x4 at home and will be driving a sports car with low profile tyres. Is this road doable in a sports car if I take it slow?

All depends on if the grader has been through and what the weather has done 24-48h before.

I would say you should be fine but if we get rain and traffic on the road it can get quite bad. Worst case you need to go around on the R617 but give it a go.

I would not chance it, I've done the road twice, the first time was pretty smooth sailing even for a platcar......the second was pretty rough even for my FJ!!

If you have the time, just deflate and drive the road. The scenery is worth it.
My apology, just realised you want to do it in a sports car. I would not unless you really have a lot of time to take it really slow.

    Short answer, no.

Depending on what kind of sports car your low profiles might be the bigger problem of the 2.

Hi Paul, I was born that side and my family lives there, I was home in September and the road was good and I was driving a BMW 320 d. So you will be fine, but do not think of taking your small car to Sani Pass

September is before the rains and typically after they have done some road maintenance. I wouldn't do it in a sports car, head down to Howick and route to Underberg from there, you'll have much more fun.

If you don't mind driving slowly and getting your car a bit muddy / dusty yes it's fine.

Driven in a Mazda 2 no issues at all.

Thanks for all the replies everybody. Sounds like its very much dependent on the rain and whether its been graded recently. I have to go to Nottingham Road anyway so when I'm there I'll inquire about the current road conditions and make a call.

Hi Paul , take my advise I was born in the area, I was there in December ( 2017) with my BMW 320 d, and it looks like I will leave my Pajero here in Cape Town this coming festive season, there are Taxis ( Quantum, Siyaya) travelling between Lotheni and Nottingham Road everyday, I used to use them when I was a student UKZN and they still operate even today. I have seen Hundai I20 travelling in that road, enjoy

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has travelled this road from the Notties side recently, done it many times in a sedan, but just wondering about current conditions. Thanks

Driven this road on 29 March. No issues and should be able to do it in a sedan. The scenery is spectacular!

I live in Himeville and drive this road to Notties regularly.

From the Notties side, the last section of tar has been resurfaced and is in fantastic condition, smooth, clean and pothole free (for now). They’re NOT tarred any further of the road, so the tar still stops at the farm homestead on the left.

The gravel has not been graded for a while and it shows. The road is passable, but has a lot more small rocks protruding from the road surface, making it bumpy.

There is a section of road, a few km passed the Mkomazi, right around the 1st Impendle turn off that is rougher than usual. It is passable, but take it slow.

There is also a section coming down into Stepmore that is rougher than usual, 1 large drainage ditch across the road.

Other that that, it’s a great road. We choose this section every time, as there is less traffic, less live stock and the views are much nicer than driving down the R617 towards Howick.

    Welcome to the Southern Berg
