Default Road trip through SA with dog

Hi all, new to this forum and was hoping for some tips and advise.

My husband and I are planning a road trip through SA, starting from Cape Town and driving up the coast to KZN and back. The purpose of this trip will be to explore our beautiful country as best we can, but also to take a break from our work and busy city lives. Depending on how much money we can save, we hope to go for about three months, leaving CT in April 2019. So plenty of time to enjoy some amazing places. We will drive a Fortuner 4x4 and plan on camping most nights to keep accommodation costs as low as possible. The idea is to take the coastal route up, then an inland road trip back. Or vice versa.

The difficulty is that we want to take along our German Shepherd dog. I am looking for recommendations for beautiful and memorable places to stay anywhere in SA that are pet friendly, or that will tolerate a well behaved, quiet and friendly dog. We realize this will take more planning and we might miss out on some national parks etc, but he is a big part of our lives and leaving him behind is not an option for us.

So if you have done a similar trip, or know of anything that might be useful, please do share! Even if you did it without paw stains on your back seat.

A 3 month trip through SA is better to do starting in feb. Its out of season and the weather is still great as opposed to april when winter starts creeping in. Not too much fun camping for that long in the wet and cold.

Hmmm, yes definitely something to consider. Unfortunately we need those extra few months' salaries to save enough money for this trip but will try and leave as soon as we can in the new year.

My wife and I travelled to Cape Town via Bloem, with our 5 dogs and stayed overnight at a place in Bloem called B&[email protected]
The place was great. And our dogs slept inside with us...
It is run by Tony Mitchell, who owns a small dog that thinks it is a Rottweiller, and a Rottweiler that thinks that it is a lap dog.
There is also a huge tortoise just walking around the grounds.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and Tony has water bowls placed outside the doors and in the garden.
    His cell number is: 0832705212
    Landline: 051 4473845

We have stayed there twice, and will stay there again.
    We found him on www.petfriendly

And try get hold of the January issue of GO magazine. There is an amazing section on pet friendly accommodation and activities all along the Garden Route, and other parts of SA.
