    Default Cole Hersee Solenoid

    Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get a Cole Hersee Solenoid in the Midrand, JHB North, Centurion area ?

I tried Autozone and the local spares shops, but none of them stock it and some of them don't even know what it is.

I want to use it in a custom dual battery setup.

    Andre.

I managed to track down some stockists.

GP Autoelectrical charges R350.00 for the Cole hersee 24059. Is that a decent price ?

4X4 Megaworld doesn't stock Cole Hersee anymore, they now have a Tmax solenoid for R190.00. Does anyone have any experience with these ?

Just for interest sake, Outdoor Warehouse charges R620.00 for the national luna solenoid (Cole Hersee 24059).

I would much rather stick to the cole hersee, but if anyone else have a good report on the Tmax solenoid then I might consider it. Can't beat that price, but I don't want to buy my self a hole in the pocket.

LUCAS makes 1 as well. A lot of the older Fords used them. Under R50.

André, just for interest sake, the Cole Hersee (NL intelligent) has more to it than just the solenoid. It has some electrical wizardry that automatically activates the solenoid as well as disconnects it as the DB system requires . . . eg the solenoid remains open when you start the vehicle to allow all the charge from the alternator to first recharge the main battery and then after +- 5mins allows the solenoid to activate and send charge to the secondary battery.

IMHO, stick to the CH solenoid, some of the others were not designed to handle big (relatively speaking ) current for extended periods. The coil on the more affordable one's tend to burn after 4+ hours of continous current flow.

I didn't find a problem on the coils. But I did find that the contacts on the relay burn.

    They burnt.

What I found to work OK was 5 x spotlight relays. 30A ea gives a total amps of 150A. According to spec. I still found that there was to much voltage drop and the aux didn't charge properly. Now I just run straight parallel. Works much better.

I just put in a device that will make sure that the accesories are cut off when the power goes to low.

Picked one (24059) up yesterday for R200 at Trysome Auto Electrical in Jetpark. They're a big truck auto electrical supply company.

Bought 2 genuine Cole Hersee solenoids in Mooi Street Jhb, end last year for R190 each. Can't remember the name of the place, huge spares shop accross the road from the VW Garage. Driving on the M2 in a eastern direction you get off at Mooi Street. Pass the first robot and then check for the place on your left with VW to the right. Go to their electrical section.

I foun mine at Breno AE THEY DELIVER!!! Make sure it’s got Cole Hersee imprinted around the top. There is a lot of imitations out there at a fraction of the cost, but hardly worth it!

The Lucas solenoid does not have a holding coil so will not work for long activation period.

You can try and bring down the voltage with an old 1400 Nissan ballast resistor. I had the problem on my 80 that the Cole Hersey got very hot. Brought down the voltage with a ballast resistor and it was happy.

Please take note that you get different models of solenoides with the same brand name. Most are starter solenoids which will not work for a doubble battery system because they will burn out.

What you are looking for is called a "continuous duty solenoid".

So for example you asks for a Cole Hersee Contiuous Duty Solenoid.
