Process for registering / transferring a vehicle / caravan

I notice this question being asked a lot, so here's all you need to know:

What you need:
- Ownership transfer form (yellow) from traffic department. A printed out copy is also good (attached)
- Registration form (blue) from the traffic department. A printed out copy is also good (attached)
- Contact of sale (2 copies) showing, at minimum, the vehicle details, details of buyer and seller and the transfer date. Advisable to add if things like warranties are in play or not.
- Copy of the sellers ID
- Copy of the buyers ID
- NATIS document
- RWC (responsibility for this is negotiable between seller/buyer, but the norm is that the buyer does this after the transaction)

The process:
- Payment and confirmation
- On the yellow form, (1) seller does his parts, signs and (2) the buyer does his part and signs
- Both parties sign both copies of the contract - a copy for each party's records

What the seller keeps:
- Money
- Yellow form signed by both parties (sometimes the buyers takes this also to hand in together with the blue form)
- Signed copy of the contract of sale
- Copy of the buyer's ID (and proof of address if you're paranoid)

What the buyer takes away:
- The vehicle
- Blue form
- NATIS document
- Copy of the seller's ID
- Signed copy of the contract of sale
- RWC (if so negotiated)

What then:
- Seller hands in yellow form at traffic department within 21 days (or in most cases the buyer takes this also)
- Buyer gets RWC (if not done already)
- Buyer fills in the blue form and takes the whole bundle to the traffic department for registration. This bundle then includes:
* Yellow and Blue forms
* Contract of sale
* Copy of sellers ID
* NATIS document
* RWC document
* Buyer proof of address
* Get new number plates - take new registration paper along as proof of new number (if new a new number has been allocated)


Voila... all done

George, many thanks for this info. I however am sitting with another problem. I sold a trailer last year to a friends employee, gave him all the necessary paperwork, and he promised to do the necessary to get it onto his name.
Went to licence swambo's car, and I can't, as you know who hasn't done the transfer, and so the trailer licence is now outstanding, and must be paid before I can re licence the car.
I don't have a problem doing this, but how can I now scrap the trailer after I have paid the outstanding licence, because said worker has now buggered off and can't be found.
I do have a copy of the registration docs.
Oh the trailer was in Swambo's name. and she is NOT happy!

Do you have any form of proof of the sale? Otherwise try getting an affidavit from the police stating what happened and the date on which sold it. This should act as input for the traffic department to take the vehicle off your name (with some luck and lots of smiles and smooth talking)

That is exactly why you as the seller need to hand in a signed yellow form at the licensing authority! I had the same story, they do not accept copies of the registration certificate if you want to scrap it. Getting an original certificate can be done but takes 10 working days (in Gauteng, at least) and means queuing twice. Just a word of warning, have the copies of the ID document certified - I had to provide certified copy of my ID or the original ID for renewing a vehicle license. This apparently depends on the whim of the person behind the counter - some demands the original ID, some accept a copy and some wants a certified copy.

Thanks guys, I do have the bill of sale, but I stupidly did not get the buyers ID number. I will see what I can do.

Yellow form is the seller's responsibility and it covers the seller's bum!

It protects you from

• Unpaid license fees
• Traffic Fines
• e-tolls
• Vehicle involved in criminal activities
• etc

Once you submit the yellow form, the vehicle is officially off your name and the buyer has 21 days to submit the blue form.

Short of hiring a detective to go hunt down your buyer, you are either have to pay every year or pay now and scrap the vehicle...

Some licensing dept won't process a transfer of ownership before the owner themselves have handed in the yellow form, other places allow the buyer to submit the yellow form when submitting the blue form/transfer of ownership.
