Default How to get spare wheel lock off

    Hi,

I have never had to change a tyre but while checking everything before a Botswana bush trip I decided to check that I can get the spare wheel lock (Ford lock with key). The plastic cover stops the dust, the key fits easily and turns immediately. Then this is where I get stuck. Does it screw off or do you just, after unlocking, pull (force) it off? I did not want to force anything incase I break it.

    Help will be appreciated!!

This is the lock. Please advise after unlocking how to remove? Does it just pull off or do you have to unscrew? (I am screwed )

That looks like the same kind of lock system as used on my Frontier's aftermarket bumper. It should just pull off. On the rod there should be an O-ring in a groove to protect it from dust ingress from the other side, which can be quite a tight fit, which would be causing the resistance that you feel.

Thank you will check again tomorrow in the light. I think the groove is open. How does the actual lock work? When you turn key what happens? Does it withdraws a pin from the rod?

There is also a wide groove for the locking mechanism. When you turn the key to lock it, a rounded "tongue" from the lock slides into the groove, thereby keeping the lock attached to the rod.

If I understand you correctly it then has to be pulled of and not unscrewed? Sorry to be such a nuisance

No problem, yes, just pull it off. As mentioned, the O-ring might cause it to be quite tight, but it will pull off. Click on the link in my previous post to see a picture of the rod with the lock off, it will give you a better idea of how it works.

Got a similar looking one on my Ranger. There is a hardened (tungsten?) steel pin attached to a chassis strut that goes through one of the wheel mounting holes. The big round thing as you rightly say has a plastic dust cover. The lock "locks around a groove in the pin making it more or less impossible to pull it off thereby keeping the spare wheel where its supposed to be when you need it! When you unlock it the little O-ring mentioned earlier makes it a bit difficult to pull off, just wiggle the round thing and pull hard downwards at the same time, it will eventually come off. If not try some WD40 or alike at the top. Mine tends to also stick a bit but I take it off once a year or so, clean it and spray some lubricant into the lock. The thing tends to get jammed a bit due to dust and some minor corrosion if not done regularly. That reminds me, mine needs to be cleaned again coming weekend.

With all the advice I gave it another go and just pulled it off. It came off without too much effort. Thanks for all the help guys.

Just remember to clean it and give it a generous dose of lubricant such as Chain Wax before putting it back (and redo every year at least)

Just to reiterate the "keep it clean" advice.
Came to fit a new rear bumper myself yesterday on my 2018 XLT and the key wouldn't go into the lock (white plastic cover had been in place).
Long story short, water and sand had made it's way into the lock from above and seized it up. 2 hours of knocking/spraying cleaner and lubricant/poking etc and finally got the key all the way in, then another hour until the lock turned.
I soaked it in paraffin and then used an electrical contact cleaner spray to clear out the lock. Could not believe the amount of sand and muck that came out of there.
Refitted with a home made rubber seal on top and tape sealed the plastic cover in place. You don't want to be stuck on a freeway or in the middle of nowhere and battle with a wheel lock.

    Completely agrees!

We've had quite a number of incidents at work where people could simply not get those locks off or the keys in! I remove and clean mine every 6 months, properly.

It took less than a few minutes for thieves to destroy my nephew's brand new wild track lock and make off with his spare wheel. Cops say the sprayed it with something and just bashed it apart.
