    Default Meade xtc 90 telescope

Astronomy has always fascinated me and I want to start exploring our universe when travelling.

I need a rugged telescope in a box that can handle rough terrain.

I came across this meade xtc 90 on a tripod in a box at orms photography in CT.

I am a beginner at this so would this setup be suitable for me?

    Any advice?

I assume you mean a meade ETX 90 a catadiopric ( a Maksutov-Cassegrain in this case) telescope aperture 90mm and focal length of 1250mm , also look at www.technoro.co.za to give some idea of prices
90 mak's are great for planets , double stars , globulars but not great for wide field view's of galaxies etc. They hold collimation well and are fairly robust.

For travel I use a celestron C5 on an SLT mount similar to the new Celestron nexstar C5 also a catadiopric scope but a Schmidt- Cassegrain, similar in size and weight of a 90 Mak but with a 5 inch aperture (127mm) and 1250 focal length so will gather more light , better all round scope in my opinion

What I forgot to Ask is what price the 90 ETX is I have one in the Czech Republic where I go one a year but the mount is all plastic and not as good as say a Skywatcher/ Celestron equivalent

    Tx for your comments Richard.
Check out the orms direct website for pricing.
I am in CT in June and will then investigate my options further.

The best thing you can get is a good set of binoculars. Rugged and easy top carry in a 4x4.

After that I'd get a refractor telescope. The maks are high magnification/low resolution that are only good for double stars and and some planets. A reflector loses a lot of collimation in transport and overlanding whereas a refractor is less susceptible to dirt roads in my experience.

But if you don't want to lug a tracking mount with you I'd get binos. Especially if you only want to do visual observations.
