This looks like a very good idea for reasonable material easily available -always an old blade or two about in a woodwork shop

-some nice large cleavers can be cut from large diameter blades- if you search the web for pics.

    How to cut....

    - mini-grinder? water-jet? bandsaw? laser-cut? SWAMBO's fierce cutting stare?

Grinds done. I released where the issue is with the grind lines not 100%. Applied a fix. Will test the effectiveness of the fix.

A grinder should cut it. Good idea for practicing and developing your skill. I like to know what steel it is and then try and apply the correct heat treat.

You need to make yourself a mini bandsaw .It must be difficult to get a straight line on a longish blade. Are you eyeballing it or do you use a jig.?

Is there any difference in how stainless is hardened. ?

440C is a air hardened steel. I use the compressor to force air while clamped in an old book press. others are oil hardened. The temp and soak times are different between different steels.
The biggest difference between stainless and carbon steel is the temperature. Around 816 degrees vs 1040 to 1080 for stainless

I use the belt grinder to refine the profile of the blade. Then eyeball it to see the balance, shape of the blade

I Google papers on the steel. The students research different methods to achieve certain results. That is where i read that 1040 for 440C was producing better toughness

I bought this beat up 4x6 bandsaw for about R700 It would be perfect for what you do. I see they often have beat up ones at the same auction house.

I would love to get one. The scroll saw does not work for hard thicker wood. No metal. So lots of limitations.
