Default What alternative to a Range Rover Evoque

A single lady friend of SWAMBO's recently got a massive raise (like double her annual salary) and wants to treat herself.

She's currently driving a Hyundai Santa Fe with a gazillion km on the clock.

She's an engineer and needs to drive gravel roads every so often for work and when visiting her parentals on the farm.

She likes the Evoque, 3 or 5 door doesn't matter.

However, there are some less than stellar reviews from owners on them. I've recommended a Freelander instead, but she finds it too boxy. What other "good looking" SUV's are there?

    Budget around R350k.

Drove the new facelifted Kuga recently as a courtesy car - the 2 litre Diesel Trend. Now that the 1.6 litre petrol is discontinued the 1.5 liter EcoBoost is the only petrol remaining. Good value for money.

R350k buys 2nd hand options of the above mentioned. Single lady friend? I would rather go for something a little less shiny but new. Service plan and warranty and "nothing" to worry about. Push the budget a little bit and get a Tiguan, Sportage, or Tucson. Very reliable vehicles with all the bells and whistles (or the ones that count)

    So, basically a softroader secondhand?

The Audi SUV's would be a definite option imo

I think there is a thread here where a member wants to sell at that price, very good deal, saw the thread but cant find it now.

i understood that these and the Freelander where the more reliable of the Land Rovers?

Friend of mine just purchased a Q3 with 30K odd kilo's which seems pretty nice.

The big wheels make all these cars look nice, but then gravel road will suffer.

Nope, a million miles and twenty years of technology apart.

Itís the successor in name only, an evolution, but in no stretch of the imagination the same thing.

Just like every other new model from any other manufacturer.

Mechanically, yes. The Evoque has lots of extra electrickery which is a tad problematic apparently.

A massive 100% increase and she can afford a R350k car - how poorly was she paid before!

She sounds rather 'appearance conscious' so I won't recommend a Subaru.

    Her options are:

    Qashqai
    RAV
    Kuga
    X-Trail
    Kadjar
    Creta

I'd avoid the German soft roaders as she only has R350k.

She could maybe look at a Haval, but image wise she may baulk at the thought.

the Mahindra TUV, but again, she'll reject it.

She won't get a Renegade at that price, but that would suit her perfectly.

Hi , have just gone through the process...wife needed a new car....opted for the:
Kuga...boxy and a bit of a Mom's school kid runabout
Kadjar...nice but not all that solid...lots of fancy stuff inside but showy and lots of hard plastic on finishes...rear panels hard, front soft ??
    Rav... Not bad... bit pricey

Got the CX5 Mazda ...new ..and she is very happy...not as gutsy as the others but much better finished inside and solid....

    Hope this helps

    Regards

Yoh. You'll be surprised Manny. Just employed somebody and gave them a 110% increase over their current basic. Having a degree in HR and working for peanuts can't be nice!

+1 For the CX5. It was runner up for World Car of the Year, only beaten by the much more expensive Volvo XC60

Mitsubishi Outlander. My wife (and me included) loves her Outlander. This is her second one and both have been phenomenal. At R350k she'll get a very good vehicle. We didn't pay anywhere near R350k for our 2014 model last year.

truth is nothing compares to the evoque in terms of looks (at least not in that segment of the market).
the new hyundai tucson looks really nice but doubt there are any in that price range yet.
