Default Kids MX Bike. Which one?

    Hi.
Looking for some advise. Minime has been saving up for a year or so for a quad bike and has after the last good school report now achieved a R4000 target.
I dont like quads so showed him some 2 wheel ones and he likes it alot now also.

So what is a decent bike for him to ride. He is now 7 but physically strong for his age due to his 3 previous years of wrestling.

I dont mind going second hand and it will teach him a bit of the mechanicals as well as long as it doesnt become a endless unreliable money pit.

He will ride with me while I am on the MTB so only offroad and between 10-30km a day.

Il add a bit of cash for him if needed but dont want to waste money.

    Any advise?

Normally these smaller (kiddie) bikes are made from old farm gate posts and are almost unbreakable , until you give it to a kid . But they are heavy and not really something you want to start out on if you want to practice your wheelies or bunny hops . Spend a bit more and skip the Makro bike section and rather go and look at something decent at Sportsman Warehouse or a bike shop . Also look at getting a 1 by 7/8 as that will teach him to first just play with gears at the back , they get a bit confused with all the levers and crap on today's bikes and that is when things start to break . The rest will be his choice .

    I'd say get a proper 80/85cc MX bike : YZ80, CR80, KX80, something like that.

If that seems too extreme, the Japs do make a very nice 4-stroke these days. Yamaha TTR110:

Please be very careful with this, it can turn into a money pit. Jeans and a too big second hand helmet ain't going to cut it.

As well as the bike, you need decent gear as this is the only thing between the kid falling off and laughing and a traumatic trip to the hospital. If you are both serious, shop around for the gear before the bike, then you both know that you are serious and will be well prepared when that bike comes along. Even if it is second hand it is a necessary investment.

Don't get me wrong, both my kids were on bikes from the age of 6 and these were the days when kids gear was damn hard to come by and I was stuffing their T shirts with foam, both got their full licenses in their teens.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

I have some history in the sport (although long ago) and agree with you.
I will buy the full kit to protect all the important bits. No issue with that.-Still cheaper than letting him play video games when it comes to the cost of life.

Thanks for the comments. The bigboy is quite attractive. As well as the TTR110 but that one is quite pricey for a startup. Interesting the big price difference between the bigger brands and the likes of Bigboy. But it doesnt seem like the Bigboy falls in the category of the normal chinese junk?

There is nothing wrong with the Big Boy although it won't take the abuse that the big name bikes will. Keep it maintained and you will not have a problem.

Another reason i would go Big Boy is the trend kids grow. In two years time it will very likely be too small so i dont see much use in getting an expensive big name brand. Once he's crown up you can get him a CRF230/250/450 or a Suzuki/Yamaha.

Thanks for all the advise gents.

Looked at the TTR125 but its way to big for minime.
Then we found a JNR90 Big Boy. Perfect size.
Got it for much less than his budget and will spend about R500 to get it tip top. Engine runs very well with some service items needed.

It is based on the Old Suzuki JR from what I can tell - should be perfect. From that you can move up to a YZ80 but that is a totally different bike, a true mx bike. A YZ80 can comfortably wheelie with my adult body

If he grows more than 15cm in a year yes. 8)

Has about 2-3 years on that bike. Tyres are flat but rear shock on its lowest setting.

Will pass them down as we go along. Seems like SWAMBO actually wants to get the TTR 125 to ride with him.

My daughter has a TTR 110 and she is 10 now.
She can just touch the ground so it will be good for another couple of years.
She upgraded from the TTR 50 last year.
Plenty of torque and power for kids and runs on 3lt of fuel for the days riding.
    It's a auto with 3 manual gears.

She loves it and they built great confidence with it and being able to go over/ through some pretty technical stuff with the great torque that bike has.

    And of we go.
Properly washed, new tyres and a service. Cleaned exhaust rust and some other bits and painted everything showing marks. Runs like a new one and the little man thoroughly enjoys it.

Hope they (and you) enjoy it, but please get some proper riding gear as well.

These kiddies bikes and gear is reasonable well priced and you can easily buy and sell gear 2nd hand.

I would have gone for a pw 80 as it is bullet proof and keep its value.
