Default Tent Trailer ideas? (Now a build log)

(EDIT: See the finished Trent at the end of this thread)

I have been playing with a basic design for a light-weight low profile tent trailer. I carry everything I need inside my vehicle including fridge, kitchen and water so only really need the trailer to carry the tent, mattress and bedding. It'll provide a super quick-setup, stable, dry base for, and carry the tent only. Frame folding up with the collapsed tent inside. Was thinking steel frame, then galvanised, or aluminium. Custom canvas tent. Possibly some shallow drawers.

Any ideas and/or additions? (*Designed in the free Sketchup (https://www.sketchup.com/download), will post my file shortly)

Great concept. Only two comments from me:
    - what height is the step in area. Must be at least able to allow you to stand up in?
    - the open up lid becomes a floor. But how many times will you need this? To me it may become a headache to seal properly and will be difficult to manufacture to get a smooth finish.
I would rather go for a canvas or plastic type cover that RTTs are made of.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks. Step in area's lowest height would be 2m (so I'll just fit), about 2.2m at highest.

Yes, the cover becomes the floor and you're right, a plastic or even fibreglass might be preferable. Would have to be strong to support the weight of 2 people and unfortunately that means heavy. A double skin aluminium frame might work. Will give it some thought. Anything moulded will be too expensive so it must be something off-the-shelf or easy to make. Sealing too is a consideration but there are some good rubber seals available so should be able to find something that does the job.

A 2200 mm long x 1500mm wide double bed on wheels - only 750 mm off the ground (desk height). The Urbanite will be available with two tent options. This bikini tent is aimed at the entry level two person market that just want to get out of a ground tent and have a great bed, extra packing space and a decent tent.

I've identified a niche for persons that have a small car (B licence) and like to weekend camp at Hermanus, Langebaan, etc. that has a Spar nearby. Daily, they have access to ice, produce and fresh meat for a braai, or they can catch a bite at a local fastfood/restaurant outlet.

I trust the Urbanite will also appeal to the many youngsters (and some toppies) that attend the various music/art/cultural festivals that we have in SA (Ramfest, Oppikoppie, Rocking the Daisies, Grahamstown, Afrikaburn, etc..)

This small tent allows for limited space (as at festivals) and quick setup. Only two guy ropes up front, the rest are fixed with tension rods (I know that extra guy ropes will need to be provided in the event of stronger wind.)

The second tent option will follow shortly, and is designed with a sideroom, awning and sidewalls, and aimed at the small family/ more traditional campers.

The trailer's weight excluding the tent (on the weighbridge) is 190 kgs. I assume the tent, mattress, poles, etc. won't add more than another 60 kgs, so I'm hoping I will top out under 250 kgs. This means I can limit the GVM to 430 kgs and still provide 180 kgs of pack weight. I can also fit a 750 kg braked axle which is intended for an upgraded version, the Sportlite.

Manufactured in 3CR12, seam sealed and powder coated, 14 inch rims and a rubberide axle.

The pack space under the bed can take a whopping ten ammo boxes and still have 100 mm spare above.

    All input/crit is welcomed.

Yes, pity though, the Metallian Urbanite seems to have died a quiet death.

The GT trailer Spider looks good but a little OTT.

So I've been working on my design.

    To reiterate my requirements:

    1. Trailer tent only - the kitchen, utensils, fridge/freezer, water, food, etc are all already stored/carried in my 4x4 bakkie, no need to double up on anything, or move anything to the trailer except maybe the chairs and table.
    2. Some storage for chairs/table in sealed side sliding drawer and clothes in sliding drawers under the bed
    3. Super fast to erect and close, < 3 mins
    4. Inner wood deck - space for 2 chairs & table inside in case of bad weather, otherwise used for changing/bag storage
    5. Large netted windows, waterproof when closed.
    6. Folding frame/deck from aluminium, supported with gas struts. Rubber seals all round
    7. KISS (keep-it-simple-stupid) and light weight < 400kg
    8. An awning also planned for one side.

Here is the final draft. I've called it the "Trent".

I found someone who builds trailers who can build the base frame, heavy duty axle, wheels, shocks, coupler, etc from steel for me. They will also get the licensing done legally.

Basic frame without cladding - R12500

There are a couple of companies who do canvas, I haven't chosen one yet but there's plenty time to decide.

My friend and I will do the deck from aluminium, he has the guillotine, bender, cutter and mig welder.

Hope to get started in the next few weeks.

    Have you considered:

    1. Making the bed a bit higher, ie taller trailer sides and perhaps fit a sliding kitchen drawer slide into the front left side. It need not be much deeper than about 300mm, so the extra overall height for the trailer will not be too much

    2. Fitting an awning of some sort to the left over the proposed kitchen area. Must be able to leave it off (Velcro?) if you want to sleep over for 1 night and don't want to put it up.

Good luck with the project. Very similar to the Conqueror Supra II that I used to have. Brilliant concept. It must have 15" or bigger (bakkie type) wheels

    Thanks,

    1) As mentioned the kitchen is in the vehicle so I don't want the weight nor complexity of a kitchen in the trailer, also not to keen on the smoke/odours contaminating the canvas. I often have breakfast/lunch/picnic away from the camp so it suits to keep everything in the vehicle.
    2) The awning is a great idea, will definitely be looking at attaching one.
    3) One drawer will pull out the side (it may have a lid so can be used as a low table) and the other out the back from under the bed.

The closest production trailer I can find to this idea is from Rongcheng Longhe in China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1_cpLTMr_Y but there's precious little information about it

Your weight distribution/balance on the trailer needs to be looked at, wheels need to move forward, design it to have 80 kilograms on tow ball.

Picked up the base from the so called "professional" trailer builder earlier this week after 2 months of waiting.

And now have spent 3 days fixing all the stuff ups on the build.

Plan next is to make the lid out of aluminium, then clad the whole thing, then have the tent part made.
