Default How important are sand tracks?

    Howzit.

Am off to Namibia in two weeks and am new to that part if the world. Will be driving central, a bit of a the north and the West.

How imperative is it to bring along a set of sand recovery tracks?

    Thanks!

    Not important . Just like a winch...😊

But seriously..... if you have packing space bring them along but deflating your tyres is a better recovery system

Have used them twice on the last couple of dunes on the Boso trail between Mabua and Nossob.

Have lived in Namibia for 25 years and have driven in some sand in my time. They look very cool attached to your vehicle

I have a pair that I've used a lot in the swampy areas of North-Eastern Namibia. Like all my other equipment, it is stored INSIDE my vehicle.

Your best recovery aides are a number of empty military sand bags (obtainable at your local co-op) and a shortened Lasher Ladies spade.

Traveling solo, i think they are important, but in a group, it is much easier getting the snatch strap out.

When you travel alone into a remote place it can be beneficial, but a few sand bags and a shuffle can go a long way to help you. It also depends on the season and terrain as well.

In many years of overland travel I have only ever used them once - in Bots and that was driving a low slung Ford Ranchero which built up a "nice" bow-wave of sand in front of the vehicle!

The idea of the bags and shovel is good since they don't take up much space and are not heavy but if in 40 deg plus heat of the day - not fun!

Really depends on your vehicle, where you go and when, I guess.

Itís one thing to play about in sand dunes with other people about , another entirely different thing to be on your own and up to your axles in Iona with no chance of anyone coming round till next tuesday fortnight.
Essential in some circumstances, unnecessary in others. Personally I donít like the idea of the bags, thatís just more digging and I do enough of that at home, Iíd take mats for sure

Matteo, if you plan to drive the river beds at this time of year they will probably be quite wet and you might well become bogged down. If you are traveling solo you might well need to use sand tracks. Even if you don't actually get to use them they will give you the confidence to venture into more remote areas. The river beds are the highlight for most people when visiting north-west-central Namibia.

I have never needed these so-called sand tracks in dry sand, rather have needed them when bogged down in wet conditions. In dry sand properly deflated tyres, a spade and diff-lock/low range usually are enough.

That said they are worthless without a spade and often need to be paired with a Hi-lift jack when well and truly bogged down. I have a pair of Maxtracks permanently mounted on top of my vehicle and can recall at least 3 occasions in the past when I needed to use them. I would have needed to wait for another vehicle to happen along without them, which at times could be a day or two. If traveling with other vehicles they become less important to take.

I'm not sure if a shuffle will help if you're bogged, but one of these days I might try to do one !!

I'm also a fan of sand bags and a shovel. Not dignified, but it works. It also weighs virtually nothing.

I vividly remember your report on the stuck situation you found yourself in, in the riverbed in Namibia with only your Swambo as assistance. I had a quiet chuckle at the time, purely because of your writing style. But I think you can speak with authority on the subject!

The answer is simple: If you take them, you won't need them, if you do not take them, you will need them.
