Evening all,
I recently bought a Freelander 2 with 133 000kms on the clock here in Cape Town. Having never owned or driven any kind of SUV extensively I had it checked out by a longstanding, now indie, Land Rover mechanic before purchasing the vehicle. What bothers me is a "whining" noise at acceleration from 1st to 2nd gear (much like another thread on here, but that has not been resolved as yet circa 2016). The Land Rover mechanic told me that the sound is normal and nothing to worry about. My buddies 2013 FL2 does not exhibit the same noise.
Any guidance and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed. In this case, it's only at acceleration from a standstill up until 2nd gear.
Is that the haldex you're talking about? For interest sake, did it whine all the time or only at certain speeds? According to the LR indie I spoke to, a faulty haldex is most prominent at 80 to 100kph.
Thanks for your response.
To be honest, I don't know if it was the haldex or not. I can find out next week. I also can't remember at which speeds the the whine was present. It was not across the whole range and could have well been between 80 and 100km/hr. We caught it right at the beginning before it got loud. A stranger in the car probably would not have heard it

I was led to believe that it has to do with the short gearing in first gear....the I6 has an even shorter gearing, so the whine is more pronounced....mine has done that from the time I got it and it's still like that 3 years and 50 000 kms later
Likely the the diff
Remember it disengages after 40km ph hence possibly only hearing in first 2 gears
Whining diff is a common prob on the Fl2

I'm pretty sure it was a bearing in the diff in my wife's case, and not the haldex. Sent an email to confirm. I know that the local agents did not have a good record of repairing it, whereas the indy mastered the art.
Just received confirmation that it was the diff.

My indy mentioned that the diff problems can be due to a software problem. Something about the torque split to the rear diff being incorrect when one coasts downhill, placing extra strain on the diff. There was apparently a bulletin about this from Land Rover. He corrected this setting when he repaired the diff.

Also check the level of the power steering fluid. If low it will also cause a whine.
It DOES NOT use normal ATF!!
I have met some crazy people. They have made me their leader...

Thanks everybody!
Had the rear diff replaced this week. FL2 feels great!
Still a few noises I am trying to put my finger in though.
Normally when a FL2 whines it is because it realises it's not a Discovery...
JK. was a rear diff whine on mine. There can also be a power steering pump whine. I also had the 2011 SD4.
