I am sure this also happened to you: the teenage kids sneered at your old and bad music taste and then they listened to a “new” song on the hit parade which they loved: “Love is all around” by Wet Wet Wet and then you pulled out the original version of many years before that was performed by The Troggs.

Or they listened to “Come together” performed by Aerosmith in the movie “Armageddon” and then you played them the original Beatles song, and watched their faces.

Well, I have been caught out like that many times through the years, too many examples to mention but this one:

Working in the Post Office directly after leaving school, end of 1972, sorting mail together with my black colleague Joseph in Potchefstroom army basis civic Post Office, prior to doing my national service at 2SSB Zeerust, we listened to the radio whilst working and I can still remember him singing along with the hits. Tunes like “You’ll always be a friend” – Hot Chocolate and “Two of us” – The Dealians.

About 10 years ago someone with a big record collection gave me a copy of the song, but to my surprise it was this one: (The one I have is a little bit more upbeat).

I think the English version is called "to the door of the sun" also by her - great song from yesteryear.

In the late 70’s there was a song called “Friday on my mind”. Never had it on record or tape, and could not remember the artist. A couple of years ago I started with a serious attemp to find it and found lots of versions of the song, but not the one I remembered. Then the people next door held a very noisy and loud party on a Saturday evening. One of the songs they played that I recognised was “For your love” by Chile, and this rang a bell. Google revealed that Chile also recorded a version of Friday on my mind. The version that I remebered ....

Happened to me. Back when Behind Blue eyes from limpbizkit was a "New" hit. My dad was singing along the background music as we got ready for a braai. So I teased him,. I said , "So jy like ons laaities se musiek he ?" He shook his head went and fetched his record player and ripped out an LP from "The Who" Later I also recognized the song from the CSI sieres aswell.
