Default Tankwa Karoo and Old Postal Route

Last weekend we stayed at Elandsberg Cottages in the Tankwa Karoo, had a beer at the Tankwa Padstal, went for lunch at Gannaga Lodge at the top of the Gannaga Pass, cycled a few times, went up to the lookout point on the Elandsberg, took a few photos, braaied a few times, took naps in the afternoon and on Monday took the Old Postal Route from Elandsvlei through the northern part of the Cederberg down to the Biedouw Valley for a late lunch at Traveller's Rest. Being the Tankwa we fixed a few punctures as well.

We have been there about 6 years in a row, just fantastic. Not sure if I am happy with the extra cottages at Elansberg, but I think they are sited nicely so you can still skinnydip in summer.

Good news pwgg: Skinny dip is still one of the many pleasant activities at Elandsberg, even with the additional units!

    I used a Canon 5 d mark 4 with a 14mm Rokinon F/2.8 manual lens, 25 seconds, ISO 2500.

Fantastic photos - love this part of the world!!

We are completing the postal route west to east Easter weekend and am wondering as to the state of the road.

We drove the route December 2016 and it was easy - has anything changed?

Still fairly easy, can be more of a challenge when the rivers are flowing, but it was bone dry.

Reviving this old thread. Does anyone know the current flow of the river? Contemplating taking this route to Jamaka.

Is it possible to tow my XT140.
My buddie has a Discovery Sport and Camptech trailer. The videos seems okay I found on Youtube?

We were through there in December, then everything was good. There was only one spot that I thought would be quite tricky when towing something. It was a steep drop down into the river bed, with a very sharp turn. Iím pretty sure youíll have to disconnect there and pull/push by hand around that corner.

    Thx Tolbos

I doubt if I want to pull or push a 1 ton trailer down an embankment
I will do it some other day or if someone else can direct me otherwise.

Seems like an awesome drive though.

I'll agree that one spot at the river, going up or down, might be tricky when towing without low range. The trailer isn't the problem, the lack of low range is. Going down might still be fine (east to west).

Does anyone know if this route is open, and if we may (legally) drive it yet?

I have Low Range. And another vehicle that can help in tandem.
Still think your first time should be with a person who did this route before though. Hopefully with plenty offroading experience under his/her belt to help in these sticky places.

I did this route for the first time last week, from west to east.

In my view low range or even 4x4 is not needed, although as said here before if you towing may come very handy once or twice.

If you do it from east to west, you may need it a bit more.

Please note I have NEVER towed off-road, thus have no experience in this field, however have done a fair bit of off-roading, and have seen other people with trailers so have a fair idea.

I'm quite interested how much water was in the river? Last time we were there, there was no drop of water in sight. (Apr 19)

    Sorry only saw this now

I did 3 crossings, remember I was 1 person in one vehicle, so did not take any chances. From W to E the first crossing was about 400mm the rest 2 - 3 inches deep.
