    Regarding price comparison to navara or hilux, you spot on, how on earth can you justify
    being 300 to 400k more expensive

    That been said, you get the merc warranty, merc feeling of being taken care of when it comes to niggles and services,
    snob value, 3 pointed star and its something different. As i said, if we do see tons of them on our roads from now till
    end of this year, how would you explain it when comparing a v6 amarok which spec 4 spec is a wiser better more value
    for money, more power for less. Time will tell.....

    The 350 (depending on price) might, however as I've mentioned before, be worth it with an actual bulletproof Merc engine, and much more lux inside with many other Merc goodies. It's much closer to the real thing.

    They will sell no doubt, but the typical buyer is someone who has enough money to no care that they are being @@@@@d! Or someone knows nothing and does no research on cars before they buy, or the soccer mom who said to her husband she wants one and cannot be convinced otherwise.

    All I can say the decision to buy one is all heart and no head.

    The Navara has 6 year warranty as far as I know, the warranty would take care if something major went wrong, the service plan will will just cost you the service if expired?

    The Navara has a 6 year 150 000km warranty and a 3 year 90 000 service plan, but I am sure if you upgrade to a maintenance plan or pay the items not covered by the service plan like brake pads and wiper blades to 100 000km its still not going to cost R400 000.

    First I thought the Navara was seriously over priced, then the V6 Amarok came and that too is way over priced and now this! That is a lot of money for nothing more than a bakkie

    Either im far to disconnected from reality or my salary is.

    We did not mean 'NONE AT ALL' we meant it will be a very low volume seller.

    Guys said the Triton would sell - it doesn't.
    Then they said the Fullback would outsell the Triton - it doesn't.
    Then they said the V6 will lift Amarok sales due to the Milk Bottle stigma - it hasn't.
    Then they said the new Navara will be a hit - it isn't.
    Now they say the R1million Xerox will sell - it won't.

    The Xerox will sell in smaller numbers than the LC70 series... mark my words.
    But I'm sure month 1 & month 2 will be good months... maybe 400 each of those two months.
    Then it'll settle to less than 200 a month.

    From a different angle.
    The V6 Amarok was labelled expensive. Then comes along the new Merc at 1 bar. Now our minds tell us that the V6 VW is slightly overpriced but the other end of the scale, tgat is Hilux, Ranger, KB, Triton, Fullback, and lower the Tatas, Mahindras, FAW, GEM and others, now look cheap or at least affordable.

    Watch closely the rapid price rise later in the year and early next year. Soon 560k and above for a 4x4 will be the new norm.

    They will, hence I said my salary is clearly not up to date with reality as even if I wanted to I couldn't afford to pay close to a bar for any vehicle never mind a bakkie.

    Maybe one day when im a big boy but then id still prefer a basic cheapish 4x4 for the rough stuff and a luxury city car for the work commute

    And that is a good rule to live by I think, rather a big luxury house than a big luxury vehicle, each to their own I guess.

    In my opinion even after the merc the V6 Amarok still is.

    I hope you wrong about the rapid price rise for a 4x4, I cant picture scratching and denting a 4x4 that I paid half a million rand plus for.

    I have made a couple of heart decisions myself, but sold my Jeep about a year ago. Buying something like a 3 door Wrangler, a Harley or a 2 seater sportscar (have owned one before) will never be a rational decision.

    Buying a bakkie for almost double the price just because its got the right badge on the bonnet also doesn’t make a lot of sense but us human beings are pretentious things.

    Again, 200 would be a very successful product line. So your statement is contradictory when you in same post state it won't sell. Comparing to figures including Telkom and SAPS bakkies adds no value in terms of sales performance comparison.

    Apart from this, these sales figures do not take into account profit margin. High volume low margin businesses are hard work.

    I suspect the X-class will be the most profitable leisure double cab on the market and much more than for other brands, simply because Merc knows how to hit that niche, and also sell a shyt load of overpriced extras (that you don't get with other brands) with each sale. Most of these bakkies will go out 150k to 400k more than their list price and those extra sales items Merc is milking it with 300 or 400% profit margins.

    Just looking at my business. We are happy to sell low volumes, x robots, a month at high margins, Y rand, as a specialist and niche product, vs selling 2000 hobby or toy robots at R100 a unit profit. A lot less work and a lot less stressful. The trick is to hit that niche market and no doubt Merc is doing the same here.

    R&D for the x could also not have cost that much as they used the Navara tech as a starting point, but then again they have gone very big on marketing, perhaps they could not afford both and maintain their usual margins.

    I was commenting on whether it will sell or not.
    Toyota sell about 260 70 series bakkies a month, VW sell slightly less Amaroks.
    I say the Xerox will sell less than those two.

    If that somehow means it will be a runaway success - then that's fine.

    I'm sure some people will say that 3 sales a year is great.

    All I'm saying is it will be one of the lowest selling Double Cabs ito volume in SA...

    I do not dispute it will be profitable, charging R300k more for a Navarra should give Merc (Navarra Profit + R300k) = Lots of money.
