    Default Alternator failure & signs

Our 2.8LTZ 4x4 manual had it's alternator pack up at 119,000km.

First signs was a dead battery, this was replaced by battery manufacturer as a "faulty" battery as it was 18 months old.

3 weeks later, with the new battery, car goes dead and needs a jump start.

2 days later same thing but let the jumpers stay connected for 30 minutes. Then wife drives home and the headlights switch off, service ESP warning comes up, Battery Saver comes up and Service airbags comes on display and a minute later the windscreen wipers turn on by themselves and car loses power and cuts out. Jumper cables again and manage to get car home.

Today had the battery charging for 2 hours and then drove vehicle 30km to Key PMB. As we got into the queue the car died again with same as above warnings.
Turned out the alternator was faulty and was replaced with a new unit under warranty within an hour. We were really impressed with their quick service.

If you ever suspect an alternator issue the service advisor gave us a good tip to go into the menu and scroll to battery voltage. We never even thought of that. A healthy charge Voltage is 14.3V

Car is back on the road and a happy wife!

    Gav,
As I was reading your post I kept on thinking: volt readout, volt readout

Glad to hear the Chev warranty kicked in seamlessly.

Good to hear you were sorted quickly

just checking - warranty expires at 120 000km?

usually your issue would have surfaced at 121 000km

Checked mine and spot on 14.3V. I will keep a close look at this as I’m closing in on 100,000km

Sounds dumb, but where on the menu is battery voltage? Or is it on the newer models? (I have a 2013)

    Hi Groenman

    Hi Groenman,

My TB also a 2013. Flicking the menu button will only give you charging volts, language choice, total hours and speed limit exceed warning setting (no use setting it at 185 km/h because the TB has a speed limiter at 184 km/h - all theoretical of course, I would NEVER try this.) The later models all blessed with much more fingertip info in this setting.

I was given early warning of the alternator letting go by a bearing getting louder and louder. Just do not get caught out by the poor design battery clamps which may in some cases "duplicate" a dying battery or failing alternator.

When driving steady open road my readout sits between 14.3 and 14.7

    Mooi bly.

My 2013 TB alternator was also replaced under warranty at 60k service.
Charge also running between 14.4 and 14.7. This is normal operation.

To the OP - my sincere apology for a bit of thread hi-jacking here, but still relevant.

Failures on the TB's seems confined to alternators expiring, right front bearing seals worn out pre-mature, some suspension issues and problematic LED taillights. Now if you drive a certain vehicle you tend to notice other of the same make & model a lot more - and there are certainly enough TB's on the road to regard this section of the forum as a fair sample size. Look at how little we are posting about problems - the TB's really are well sorted vehicles. I really hope the new Isuzu MUX does it for me when the time comes to replace my TB - although I suspect the tech will be a generation old by then. (and the Isuzu 3.0 D-TEQ motor will not quite compare to the 2.8 DuraMax.). But all said and done the Chevy has been a good choice for me.

    Mooi bly.

    Hi guys

Where can I get a 2.8 Trailblazer alternator except at the agents who wants R12,000 for it?

    Or can it be fixed?

The car shows "Battery saver activated" warning light, and the agents wanted to replace the alternator.

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can probably get an aftermarket one from a place like Bosch auto-electrical etc. The thing is, most of the time it is just the regulator that goes, which is relatively easy to fix - unless the alternator is like the Patrol alternator where the regulator is internal. Perhaps take the vehicle to an auto electrician and ask them to check this first.

If it is of the new generation alternators, you might have a problem. Nowadays, alternators are controlled via the ECU, not so simple anymore. Hope for your sake it's not the case yet.
