    Default Durban to AfrikaBurn?

To all the well travelled forumites....we are 'burning' this year and need to start route planning, we want to do a two night stop over going down and one coming back (maybe two)

Google Maps show two routes - Durban - Harrismith - Bethlehem - Bloemfontein - - - then either
    1. Jacobsdaal - Britztown - Carnarvon - Williston - down to Tankwa about 40kms before Calvinia (R48/R705/N12/R384/R63/R354)
    or
    2. Colesberg - Hanover - Beaufort West - Laingsberg and then up to Tankwa on the R354 (basically the N1 all the way)

Route 2 is about 30kms longer so no real difference in time or difference.

Any advice on a recommended route and some guesthouses to stop over at will be greatly appreciated

Why not "underneath" Lesotho? Durban, Matatiele, Rhodes (for the night), Dordrecht etc?

I have travelled that route before to Tankwa.
    Mine was
    Durban
    Port Shepstone.
    Kokstad
    Matatiele
    Mt Fletcher
Turn off to Rhodes on dirt via Naudesnek
    Sleep over
    Rhodes
    Clifford
    Dodrecht
    Molteno
    Middelburg to on gravel again
    Richmond, go over N1
Take the gravel road , following the De Aar railway line to
    Victoria West
    Loxton
    Fraserburg
    Sutherland
    Middelpos
    Tankwa
or Calvinia.(Sutherland,Middelpos(nice pub) to Calvnia, is the longest gravel road in SA)

Very, very scenic and quiet, lot of gravel road sections, from Mt Fletcher to Tankwa

I looked at that but its effectively 40kms and 1hr 30mins longer, also generally not as safe as the N3/N1

How can you say the N1/N3 is safe??
Any quieter road and gravel for that matter is 1000 time safer to travel than a N1/N3

For instance from Middelburg to Sutherland is over 400 km of gravel, I encountered 4 vehicles, and it took me at least 10 min wait to get into N1 to cross over to V/WEST side because of high volume of traffic.

No national road or highway is safer to travel than any off the beaten track

I was comparing to the route Robh was refering to, I have done a portion of that from Durban and the N3 is safer.....agree on the gravel but I need to do 1600kms towing and time is limited somewhat.........but one day....with just the FJ........

Have you been before? What day you planning on arriving?

Nothing to do with the route, but have noticed that it has become much more crowded, so arriving later in the week is basically not an option anymore unless someone reserves a space for you.

Watch out on the R355 for punctures. My advice, contrary to many others, is rather keep tyre pressures up.

Try leave the Monday vs Sunday if heading Ceres way, traffic on the R355 is insane.

    Have a great time! Jealous.

Never been but my son has been twice and said we have to go, also a good mate went two years back. I was looking at only arriving on the Wednesday(for a few reasons, long story) and leaving Sunday(going north) but we may delay till Monday. Two years ago space was fine arriving late, do you think that arriving Wednesday will be a problem??
Also got the higher tyre pressure advice form someone else.....not sure now

    So, done and burnt
We did Gariep, (the dam flowing at 107% is something else!!) Victoria West (stayed over) Loxton - Carnarvon - Williston - Calvinia (stayed over) and then 120kms down to the Burn
On the way back we stayed over at Koffiefontein(over the strong flowing Orange again) then home (two +- 800km legs) Northern Cape roads and dorpies are great but not so in the FS and closer to Lesotho/EC......most FS roads are potholed/patched.
    Total was 3400kms.
Fantastic trip and very nice to see the Karoo and Northern Cape off the N1!!

    We're also just back.
Spent some time at Afrika Burn - amazing.
Unfortunately it was on the Friday before the event started so not during the event itself.
Chatted to many of the artists/constructors.

From there we did the Postal Route then Wuppertal/Eselbank into the Cederberg then to Cape Town.

Will be back to Afrika Burn hopefully next year.
If you make a noise or need music in the bush or on the beach, you’re missing the point.
