    Default Khumaga Ferry not Operating

Just warning to to anyone heading to Khumaga in the Makgadikgadi, that the Ferry has stopped operating on the 1st February until further notice. They say the water is too low for the ferry to operate. You have to enter/exit via the Phuduhudu gate.

Surely, if it is too low for the ferry then you ill b able to travel through with your 4X4. Also PM Tiaan from Tiaan 's Camp he is a forum member for advice. I recall a crossing close to his camp that I accessible- but if used go directly to the gate to book in.

Hi TRON, according to the wildlife officers at Khumaga Gate they say it too shallow for the ferry and too deep for vehicles. I'll try and contact Tiaan and ask him otherwise i'll be passing there in about two weeks time and will look myself.
    Thanks

Thanks for sharing Kurt. At the rate the Thamalakane is rising due to local rainfall, I doubt the ferry will be out of operation for too long!

We went there in early December, and the ferry wasn't running then either. We walked it first (mid thigh deep) and decided to do the crossing. It's a long way round via Phuduhudu, and the road is really unpleasant from there to Khumaga.

It shows how much rain we have had. Passed Motopi a week ago and the water wasn't flowing. It was about 50m either side of the bridge.

    Hi,
at Motopi, that is already the Boteti river and yes it "flows" all the way to lake Xau, via Khumaga, Rakops etc. - if there is enough water coming.
It is roughly 60 km from Motipo to Khumaga, so that should not take much more than a day or two, but to my knowledge the Boteti is fed by an overflow from the delta so local rain won't probably have too much of an impact so far down the river I would guess.

We crossed on the 25th December 2016, the Ferry operator gave us the option of driving through as he stated several vehicles had crossed directly that day and that was visible by the tracks left behind.

We had caravans in tow so we elected to use the Ferry but the water was far deeper then then than the previous photo, walk it and access your wade depth but mid thigh with a snorkel should not be a problem unless you a giant.

I wouldn't attempt the route we did through Bots without a snorkel (especially in the rainy season). We ended up doing a few unexpectedly deep water crossings.

I have just spoken with Tiaan from Tiaan's Camp at Khumaga. He says the water is about 70cm deep and one is able to drive through. He hasnt noticed the water flowing there yet. He said we could call Heike at Tiaans Camp on 00267 74848055.

I just had a look at the ferry and the water is definitely too shallow for it to work. The water look a little deep for driving through. But I am sure if you looked you could find a crossing point. The water was flowing strongly at Motopi when I passed there this morning. Click image for larger version.

    Hi,
does anyone have a current update on that? Is it ferry or drive through at the moment?
    Thanks!

Some friends were there three weeks ago, the ferry was still in operation and the water too deep for vehicles. Ferry was running on only one motor though, and apparently struggled a bit.

The ferry was already struggling a bit in mid-november. The captain had difficulties to come to shore and to manoeuvre with and without a car...I wouldn´t dare if only one engine is working.

Maybe you can ask at Tiaans [email protected]
