Looks like they fitted some decent profile rubber on that one.

Took our newly bought 2001 Discovery2 off-roading for the first time yesterday. She did great, but the trick is to keep her power under control. Low range in second gear she handled great on sand, didn't mind wheel lifts, water or sharp inclines, but wasn't too happy about loose stones on a sharp incline. New tyres will probably solve that, but otherwise we were pleasantly surprised by her ability. Photo's to follow soon.

No problems in heavy sand, much worse than on image. 19" Rims with Duratracs, next 18" Compomotives (6th tyre on roof is just a standard road tyre as an extra spare).

Hi Jola. Any idea where to get 18" compomotive rims in sunny SA? I am very interested myself. Also have 19" Duratrack on my vehicle.
    Thank you.

    Thank you.

Have seen this reference on the forums :

The importer for the 18 inch rims is Neels Rautenbach - 082 577 0436.
But some others have had them directly delivered :

    https://www.comp.co.uk/products/prod...=pd1881-30-229

I am considering importing them directly, just have to get my mind around the cost of the rims and new tyres.

The few times we dare to go off the tarmac we have to have a Toyota as back up vehicle!

That is if the crank lasts and if the low profile tyres doesn't puncture after 1 km.

And besides....my wife will be pis.ed with me if I scratch the Mom's Taxi.......

I disagree I have taken my Disco 3 off road on over landing trips, towing a camper trailer many times. In August last year completed a 6000 km round trip from Cape Town to Moremi and back with some Namibia thrown in. Terrible roads, soft sand and not a few river crossings were all on the menu. I was travelling with convoy with a Land Cruiser which also coped without a sweat excepting his 3.5km per litre was double my 7.5 kpl while towing! I don't understand this LR brand bashing, I would never slag off another brand, they all have their pros and cons. My Disco works for me . When I change I will probably get a Toyota , Hi Lux Dc or Fortuner as that is the level I need, i don't need to challenge impossible obstacles at my age. Pictures of Evoques or RRs with low profile highway tires stuck in mud do not mean that LRs can't go off road.I do agree that the trend of LR to churn out soft roader type vehicles is concerning, but maybe that is where the market lies. You might like to read the March SA 4X4 magazine on page 76 there is an article on the Cooper Dust Series, won by a Disco 3 V8. [p.s. don't know the one pic appeared twice, can't remove it].

Many times I have think about this. Amaroks, Landy`s and many other brands taken into Africa by teams sponsored manufacturers.

In my eyes no claim to fame. These trips seldom exceeds 10k km. What can go wrong with any new 4x4 within the first 10 000km?

Claims should be made after 200k km in these conditions.

Please this is not bashing but I cannot see how longevity and toughness can be claimed by any of these new vehicles doing these once off trips.

Not because it is a Toyota but because it is a Platkar.

It's sort of like saying that Mini builds the greatest off-roaders because they one Dakar.

Not sure anymore, but in the past Holgate would have a specific 130 Defender as back up and to carry the equipment.

I have to say that we did the Skeleton Coast to the Kunene River mouth, across 40km of dunes to the Hartmanns Valley etc in Namibia in our D4 V8 shod with 18" Compomotives, with others in a Defender, Fortuner, Prado, Pajero and Hilux - and we were the only ones to not get stuck. The vehicle made it just too easy for me. JUST REMEMBER TO SWITCH OFF DSC before tackling really thick stuff.
