That's a brown house snake. Completely harmless. Will put up a fight if you handle it for the first time, but becomes very docile quite quickly if you hold on to it. Found many of them in various house we have lived in.

Stripe along side of the head and cat-eyes = Brown House Snake
Non-venomous but gives a very painful bite.

Not really. Otherwise the nip is less impressive than a very small paper cut.

    They get pretty big.
My son had the worst BHS bite I've seen, arm was blue for about 3 weeks.
My worst was by my Burmese Python.

Constrictors have backward facing teeth making it difficult to remove.
    Love my snakes though

I was bitten by a lizard when I was very young, probably around four or five and I remember how painful that was.
If I can change I hope I never know.

Correctly identified as a Brown House Snake - a harmless constrictor common around houses. It obviously has teeth but its bite is of no consequence and may cause minor bleeding for a few minutes.

Regarding the bites, I'm sure it will hurt like hell if they do bite you. I once found this fellow on the stoep between the kitchen and garage, so I released him in the back yard where there's plenty of places for him to hunt and hide. He bit me twice on my right index finger, and once on the left index finger, but he didn't even break the skin during any of his attempts.

After that he chilled out and quite happily slid between my fingers until I released him.

Sorry for the crappy pics, they were taken with an old Nokia phone.
