Default 4WD action - Australian Youtube series

I happened to stumble across this series on Youtube and really enjoy it. A really nice bunch of Aussies doing some very technical stuff in some awesome surroundings. They are rather tough on their vehicles though! After watching a couple of episodes, I've got new respect for Patrols though!

In my humble opinion I would agree. I feel that Australia is leading the world in after market development for 4wds of all ilk. If you browse the forums and FB there is some amazing products that are available off the shelf. Mind you this opinion might just be a product of my ignorance as to what is happening elsewhere. A lot of these developments are often available from the dealers as a factory option. All this in a market where good old Toyota are actively fighting the aftermarket developments - but taking advantage of them at the same time?

    Regards

I also stumbled across it the other day.
Absolutely loving the episodes, particularly when shorty is involved (an old short wheel base Patrol GQ).

I have not watched all the episodes yet but don't recall seeing anything fitted with portal axles. The Cruiser 76/78/79's really need them especially on the rear axles where the spring packs cause big problems at times by getting stuck on obstacles.

Yes - Portals are still pretty new and very expensive to will not be featured much - mainly in sales stuff. They also lift the centre of gravity quite a lot so off camber runs will be very exciting This is one very good example of where they are used (manufacturers aiming for the US or Eastern markets)

Francois, been watching them for years...
Those blokes have been doing this for many years. They spend as much as 200 days a year in the bush.

The 1st "legend" from that crowd was Roothy (John Rooth) in his 45 series cruiser called Milo (green in colour) with his border collie Jack. A few years back Roothy moved to another crowd to do his "getting bogged" and "giving it the berries"
That Cruiser did over 800 000 km and had a hard life with Roothy behind the wheel (based on the many videos)
    https://www.4x4australia.com.au/revi...2/roothys-rigs

The short wheel base GQ Patrol was Shorty for Graham Cargill. For their videos of later years, Shorty was "replaced" by a sponsored Isuzu Dmax. Graham is usually very good at picking the best driving-line threw the obstacles.

Shawn Whale, which I think is or was an editor of 4WD Action, previously called 4WD Monthly, used a 60 series Cruiser called "the Dirty 30", as it was chopped into a Ute (bakkie). Think he replaced it with a V8 79 and at times an 80 after a roll-over on a trail.

The places these blokes go require a lot of winching.
The 79 Cruiser have front and rear winches... with the double lockers and 35" tyres.

Yeah I've watched a number of old Roothy's antics and also his "new" build with some South African help. A lot of fun!

I am a South African expat living in Australia and can vouch for the "interesting" 4X4 adventures possible in Oz.
I have also met up with the 4WD Action mob once or twice most memorably on Fraser Island when they were filming the episode where three 4X4 vehicles were connected together with snatch straps to get over one of the inland diversions because the last 4X4 (belonging to Shaun Whale) was towing an enormous ski-boat (Shaun loves his fishing) on a trailer after he got hopelessly bogged in the deep dry sand trying it himself.

One of the more adventurous 4X4 manoeuvers I have ever seen - it worked though!

    The Isuzu really struggled.

The Black Series patrol driver looked like he was on a Sunday drive.

Thumbs up Re: 4WD action - Australian Youtube series

I have not missed an episode, they have all the ingredient for the best show ever.

    1. Epic 4x4 driving
    2. Beautiful scenery
    3. Giant bog holes.
    4. Slight banter and pranks.
    5. Campfire cooking (From Shauno with a heavy hand of chilly.)

    Just Epic.
