Ok, the G-wagen's bigger brother will be gentle with him

But seriously, I've never done a trail with such a nice mix of vehicles - the past... what, 6? ... trails I've done have been Jeep-dominated.
Great to have a G and some Landys with! Not to mention a crazy mix of Toyotas.
And one badass Isuzu Frontier :-) Bly jy kom, Sakkie!

Landy is fueled and packed, toolbox included for the jeeps ;-) ....i think itís going to be a very interesting comparison between lockers/articulation/tc/ifs/sfa vehicles.

Prado is out due to family obligations, to be honest Iím relieved as the group size might lead to very slow going already.

Safely back at home. Sorry I could not stay to braai, but considering it was the weekend right after my wedding anniversary, I had to pull every string I could to be able to get out today.

Nice seeing old friends, and making new ones (putting names to faces).

Thanks, Andrew, for arranging it, and everyone for attending. It was epic.

The ONLY pic I took before the phone said enough....sorry. But if you come with next time, you don't need pics

Short story. I like Piesangkloof. First timer. Couple of very nice places where the 4x2's won't be able to follow.....which I found out within 200m after entering the gate. not locking your free wheel hubs.

Dawid and I was at the back, so we didn't see a lot of action up front, but the marks we passed said the guys enjoyed themselves. BUT, being at the back, is like sitting in the backseats at school....what the teacher don't see

Swift's Pass should not be taken lightly......but you have to drive it UP. doing it downhill don't count.

Thanks for a great day out guys. Adele and I enjoyed the company!

What an excellent day out! Thank you guys.

A very nice and technical drive, keeps you concentrating the whole time.

I vote pjf110 driver of the day - that Landy went brilliantly!

Thanks Sakkie, had such a great drive together! Naughty schoolkids indeed... we had two nice "off the map" drives, that's for sure!

Sakkie, you are such a modest guy. I gave you permission to publicly brag!

When the two of us drove around to go do Swift's pass from the bottom, Sakkie was driving in front.
Swift's pass is a hellish combination of deep, loose, dry sand, peppered with loose rocks. Absolutely no grip whatsoever.
Sakkie owned that piece of trail. In a spectacular cloud of dust and rocks, he made it all the way up.
He did incur a small mechanical breakage, which he quickly sorted out at camp. But Granny was so impressive up that hill!

On the other hand, I almost didn't make it up there with the Unimog.

I've driven some serious off-road trails over the past 2 years with the Mog. Obstacles that make grown men (when they were my passengers) need a drink afterwards to recover.
Those of you there remarked on some of the battle scars on the Mog - and, for example, how I have scrape marks on the back-end, 1.5m above the ground!

Yet, for some reason, going up Swift's pass has been the single most difficult obstacle I've ever driven with the Unimog.
It took me more than half an hour to get up there.
The Mog is so heavy (almost 4 tons) that she really didn't like the incredibly loose sand / rocks up that hill.

It was a really eductional experience. But seriously, hats off to Sakkie for driving up there with Granny in 5 minutes.
    I almost gave up!

Once you're past the first difficult bit, it's actually easy going. But nothing I tried - including seriously deflating my 365/80/R20 tyres - helped me get past that first bit easily.
I just stood still, all 4 wheels slowly spinning as the low gears and diff locks did their magic :-)
I do feel sorry for whever is going to try to go up there after the Unimog - I made some massive holes and ruts in that loose sand and rocks.

Andrew - thanks for arranging a fun day! And it was good to meet so many of you guys. Hope we do it again soon.

One of those (previously dug) holes had Ganny jump so high, and of course come down hard on the rear suspension, that the prop pulled the rubber boot right out the centre bearing. Fortunately no damage done. Slow clunk-clunk-clunk drive back to camp, and 10 minutes having my hands up Granny's skirt, and the old girl was sorted again. Just clamped the cushion back into place.

That Unimog is a beast! I trusted her enough to not even wait for you at the top. What was I going to do in any case. Pull the Mog up there? Yea okay she had a tough time up that loose slope, but the rest was no more than a Sunday drive......oh wait, it WAS a Sunday drive. Glad you stayed in it and not give up. Glad you swopped co-pilots!!!! This one is MUCH better looking, and Adele enjoyed the company!!

Could I take a moment to express my jealousy that I could not be part of the group today.

This thread and the day kind of reminds me how awesome the forum is in bringing people together, and that the whatsapp groups and cliques should not impact on these kinds of events.

It took 2 weeks for this to come together and it took some cajoling from Andrew to get the ball rolling, but then it developed its own momentum and, by all accounts and pictures, it was an awesome day.

And whenever someone starts a thread again about the forum being for web wheelers and keyboardists I will just refer them to this thread.

Well done, I am very envious.
