    Default CoCT water billing

I think the City of Cape Town is trying to pull a fast on rate payers with regard to water billing. For the past year my water readings was all actuals with a variation of between 6 and 10 kl per month. This month they did an estimate water reading of 16 kl. I went and check my meter and we did only use 5 kl for January. So now my water bill went from R44 to R320.

I do my own reading and then update it on their website. This way, they take your reading as long as you update it in the window period allowed (normally 5 days from around the 30th to the 3rd more or less).

I see our buildings water reading this month was also estimated. Much higher than our actual usage has been. More in line with what we used prior to the water crisis.

Just phone them an request a proper reading. No big deal. Or mail them.

    +1

Register on the CoCT website and enter your own readings. You can do this for 11 consecutive months and then they block you for one reading by a meter reader and then it is open again for you to enter your own readings. I also selected the SMS option when I registered so I get a SMS around the 22nd of the month to let me know the system is now open to accept my new reading.

This is not a good time to let meter readers lose on our meters... They stuffed up the one reading I was forced to let them take and they recorded 434KL from 22/11 to 20/12 . Fortunately they somehow must have picked up the error and amended it to 5KL by the time the account was generated.

I also use the website to pay vehicle licenses. Works very well. There is no way I will go queue for 6 license discs throughout the year.

I think this will be corrected with the next reading cycle should it (hopefully) be an "actual" reading, also got an estimate last month.

Has happened in the past and they corrected it with the next bill.
