    Default DStv in my caravan

I am thinking of a long caravan holiday and wish to take my dstv decoded with. The plan is to mount a TV inside and the dish (small one )on the vans roof or side. Any suggestions or plans please. My biggest concern is the dish.

Most of the caravaners we camp with mount the dish on a sturdy garden fork and stick it in the ground and set it up. They usually bring quite a long arial lead as sometimes where you park the caravan you get poor reception and have to mount the dish a few meters away because of trees etc.

I use a 2.4m light steel pole welded to a small base plate with steel prongs for inserting into the ground, all stayed by 3 nylon ropes fixed to the steel wire tent pegs smacked into the ground. I use the angled steel pegs, they are easy to insert and remove.

The base plate (20cm sq) has an arrow painted on it which should point to north. The small dish is fixed to the pole at around 68.5E but needs to be vertically adjustable to suit the location in which you are currently camping. Allow for about 10m RG59 cable between the caravan and dish, as you will need to locate the dish a few metres away from the caravan to clear surrounding trees.

You will need a small compass to indicate where North is and also one of those squealer meters that are used for optimising the signal direction.

Useful hint about the north arrow.

If you are camping in the clear, you can also use a similar setup with a base plate where you drive onto the base plate with one of your car tyres, holding it in place. Then you don't need any guy ropes to stabilise the pole..

Although I believe there must be a work-around, I have been led to believe by the TV installers that the Explora needs even a bigger dish than the one used by the now extinct Dual View. This implies that the tiny dish will not work.

Yep, I would be most reluctant to lug the Explora around in a caravan. Rather buy one of the DSTV cheapies currently available and use that for touring.
