Default Clunk noise on Pajero Sport. Help please

    Hi all,

As the title states, I have a clunk noise.
It seems to only happen under the following circumstances:
    - Reverse and swing left full lock, stop, begin to swing right to almost full lock and start moving forward and as I'm straightening out I hear a clunk. I think I can feel it on the steering but can't be sure.
    - Performing a U-turn, similar to the above but no reversing involved, still need to go near full lock left and then full lock right and as straightening it will clunk.
I'm not sure if the road needs to be uneven in any way as it does it out my driveway (which has the gutter bump) and when doing a U-turn on a normal road.

I had someone listen outside the car but we can't seem to pin point it.
I also had both front wheels off and the car jacked up. Pulled and shook everything and nothing seems to have any play. Checked tie rods and balljoints but can't notice any play by hand.
The rear we checked today but on the ground, everything seemed solid there.
If I drive around 30 to 40kmh and fairly violently steer left and right to rock the car there is no noise, seems to be specific to steering to near lock left and then right (maybe even just right).

If anyone has had this problem I would appreciate some tips. I'm heading to Namibia in a few weeks and I'm hoping whatever this is can be found or at least won't let me down (doubt it will )

It seems this is quite a common problem and there are a few threads on Aussie forums.
The causes vary and some people never managed to fix it. Fixes included, control arm bushes, steering rack replacement (many were replaced that didn't solve the issue) and even something as simple as adjusting the steering wheel height.
Sadly it doesn't seem to be a specific item in general

    Hi reflex

My Triton did the same and it drove me nuts, checked everything and found nothing.

Every turn to full lock of steering wheel like you mentioned resulted in a clunk when straightened again.

So, I took off the (aftermarket) bashplate and the noise was gone.

Refitted bashplate with bushes where needed to avoid space for flex (to fit more sturdy).

That resolved the clunk noise with my Triton. So I guess the question would be... Did you remove your bashplate yet? If you have one

Sounds like a swaybar bush issue.

If you are really concerned, take it for roadworthy where the stress the suspension - that will show the defect.

How surprising some of us have this problem too! My car have the exact same behavior! But lately, couple of weeks, that noise seems to have gone!! Happy but confused!
The other day (as my warranty expires soon ) I went to mall perking lot to create the same noise by reversing full lock, gong over hump, turning full circle etc, no noise!

Same issue - also tried moving my aftermarket bushplate and cut away any areas that thought would interfere with the sway arms - didnít help.
The service center that I was at some time ago said they tightened the bolts 3 that lock the hub. I actually didnít really understand where that was but seemed to resolve it for a few months but I see it is back again ?

I will try removing the standard bash plates tonight.
Second thing I will try is removing the sway bar brackets and just hang the bar. I was thinking if it was the sway bar bushes you would hear it move frequently while cornering etc. Worth a shot though

Do these vehicles have power steering pumps?Reason i ask is my chev does the exact thing and the service centre eventually showed me its the pump dumping pressure..Although to me it sounded exactly like metal on metal type clunk.I actually thought it was that metal plate cover that sits behind the brake disks that was maybe flexing and hitting.

    Well try this.
Full lock the steering first one way.At full lock move the steering slightly away from full then back again in abrupt hard movements. If nothing move steering to other end full lock and try..If you get the sound i might be the steering pump

    Hi reflex
Mine did the same. Every morning when reversing out of driveway at sharp right turn. Took it to suspension specialist and could not finfmd the problem. They said it could be something as simple as the bump stops.
    The clunk noise eventually disappeared.......

Could be that you are turning too sharp and its the stopper clunking past the arm. Try to turn just a tad less sharp and see if the noise stops.

I took off the bash plates followed by the sway bar and the noise was still there. Also tried the steering wheel height adjustment, no luck.
The noise comes when turning back to center, usually from the right. So I don't think it is me hitting it against the stop as the noise happens when the wheels are nearly straight again.
Today I noticed that it also made the noise once or twice while driving over bumpy stuff fairly slowly. Maybe it is getting worse which might make it easier to pinpoint.

I think my next step as per Marius' suggestion will be take it to the testing centre. I'm hoping the movement that their machine exerts will reveal something

Also carefully use a crowbar between linkages etc to get extra leverage and into right spaces to check for play.

My PS 3.2 MT did the same.
Considering how and when it happened, I came to the conclusion that the sound was the sudden release of axle wind-up on the back wheels.
When starting the car the rear diff lock is engaged for a few seconds before the light goes off. When you start to drive (and turn) before the solenoid disengage the RDL, axle wind-up occur.
I have not investigate or tested my theory, but since I made sure to wait before I pull away after starting the car, it never happened again.
It could be coincidence, I don't know.
Would like to hear what you guys think.
