Default Where is All the Original Pickled Fish ???

I don't know about you guys but really enjoy the occasional Tin of Pickled Fish

The problem is it appears to have just vanished from the shelves for some time now but I still check whenever I am walking the aisles pushing the trolley in the vain hope that I might just stop and find a tin lurking in the shadows

When I was doing my 'diensplig' this was a staple diet when available in the bush.

Does anyone know what has happened to this SA favorite?

No idea, remember eating it by hand out of the tin with pap balls with the farm workers, absolute heaven...Woollies has some decent pickled fish if you have not tried it yet

Have you also noticed that Koo does not make sous boontjies in bottles anymore? Here in Cape Town there are lots of places to get pickled fish. It's better than the tins. The mense use yellow tail instead of Hake.

Agree, our local fish and chip shop makes an excellent pickled fish. The tinned stuff seems to have been replaced with Curried Fish which to my mind is completely different.

Always have the local one in our fridge for a quick meal. Damn I am hungry now.

I have been finding it regularly at my Checkers as well. Probably my common streak, but I like it, more than Woolies's version.

I used kingklip and used the pick n pay recipe. Very nice, but not the same. Also battle to find the smoersnoek tins as well.

Did the company Ocean Fresh disappear or taken over by someone else? I suspect that it all gets exported and we don't get the privilege of our own home grown tins of pickled fish anymore

Top of the list is Katonkel, then Yellowtail, then Kob/Geelbek THEN Snoek.... but they are all scarce, so Hake is the choice.

I haven't been able to find that for years now. Ocean Fresh smoersnoek went off the market for about 2 years and then smoersnoek came back (but some other brand from Namibia this time), but it was not the same. Then it went off the market again about 10 years ago (up here in Gauteng, may be different down in the Cape), never to come back. Oh, I miss that on our safaries....

We used to love to have it for lunch with some warm, freshly baked bread from a bakery in the town nearest our lunch stop. This was when we went overlanding with our two boys in the 90's and early 2000's. It was quick and tasty with some Mrs Balls, perfect for a quick lunch stop.

Tinned Pickled and Curried fish then became our replacement, but it is not the same, the runny part does not work well on slices of fresh bread like the smoorsnoek did. I haven't seen those other two around here for some time now.

This was Ocean Fresh from Namibia. Not as sharp as I remembered it. I need to go to a church fete and try it there.

It is quite nice with fish that have bones, since the vinegar softens or melts the bones. Blacktail and shad and streepies might be nice.

Thanks for the late night snack guys

Apple Jelly jam also disappeared years ago. Small bottles are available for eating with Pork. So the label says. It is not the same as before.

I have just had my lunch: woolies pickled fish and salad (home made )

Mediterranean Delicacies also make a decent pickled fish.

I also fondly remember the Ocean Fresh product.
