That is what is worrying for me. That and the approved aftermarket part prices. And how that impacts your warrantee if you use something else.
Before selling my Amarok, for the reason that it was a 4x2 single cab, I got quotes from the VW dealer for the 105k & 120K service: I can't remember which, but one of them is a fancy oil change at around 2k and the other would have been a bigger service at 5k. Same price range I got quoted for similar services on a new Nissan NP300 DC 4x4 Tdi. Since the service plan had expired, I would have serviced the Amarok at a local indy. He works alone on the vehicle, so none of that "the appy" put it back together crap, he uses either original VW spares or good quality spares imported from Germany and has got all the equipment to service & diagnose modern vehicles. His prices are around 60-70% of the dealership workshop prices.
The cambelt & waterpump change would have cost me 6k instead of 10k at the dealer.

As for VW service plan: when I bought my Amarok it came with the commercial vehicle service plan: it covers stuff like oil & filters and normal service items, but things like brakes and other wear items are not covered. This might have changed by now.

Obviously you canít compare it to a road going SUV but there is just something about a Cruiser... Itís a Cruiser thing!
I have thought about this gearing conundrum, and have decided that I like the fact that it is slightly under geared. Because this allows for bigger tyres, without taking too much power.

I guess I have made up my mind, and will now actively work my way into owning a Land Cruiser 76 V8.

    Thanks for the discussion

After 4-Wheeling for 40 years in difficult and easy conditions, towing and not the choice is simple.
I would only consider the LC76 V8 which will fulfil all your requirements.
Your other choices I would not consider, but we are all individuals in our own right.
The only reason I am giving my honest opinion is because you asked for it. I feel qualified to pass an opinion as I owned a 79 series and travelled extensively in Africa with this vehicle and now own a Series 100 VX.

I didn't read it being stipulated, but I assume that you are only looking at diesels? If not, why not consider an FJ? For only two people, it really offers superb 4x4 ability, most comfortable cruiser ride, loads of aftermarket add-ons, and the obvious overengineered reliability. Prices starting at R628k, it could be an attractive option?

PS and a solid front axle...

Nissan has announced that the Y61 patrol is End of Life. The dealers will probably be dumping them at below retail so that they can get the Y62, so now is the time to do a deal on a proper 4x4.

I love Patrols but with Nissan dumping the Y61 think of the spare nightmare in the coming years. This is why I have chose the Cruiser above the Patrol, the availability of spares. The only Patrol that I trust is the 4.8, I do not trust the current diesels.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

Please note that there are 2 types of plans. A service plan, and maintenance plan.

Service plan is as you mention it above, and with a maintenance plan you basically only pay for tyres.

Yes, back in 2012 the Amarok came only with e service plan, while the platkarre, Touareg and Tiguan had maintenance plans. Might have changed, since VW doesn't produce the Amarok S/C anymore.
