Default Lions in camp Mabua - poll

    Hi,

I am sure you have seen the post regarding experiences in Mabua, under siege, change in behaviour of lions such as loosing natural fear for man etc. I further also mentioned that I have a reservation in that same camp site and expressed my concern regarding camping in a tent on the ground. I still feel if you are sensible, wide awake and respect them you should be ok. My problem is it is a solo trip so no second pair of eyes....

I thus decided to do a poll to try to establish the level of concern or am I just being a sissy.

Please participate but feel free to comment as well. Let us try to keep it civil

Now I need to figure out how to add the poll

Do it.....Iíve always only traveled alone (one vehicle) in the bush and many many time over the last 30 years had lions in camp and Iíve only been on ground tents. Must say my heavy duty canvas gives me lot more piece of mind than my small two man nylon one did

    Hi Tobias,
We just got back last week from Mabua, we had a wonderful time, so we really hope that you will have the same.
    Now to your question.
Not only did we have Lions and hyenas around the camp, but we had a Leopard that came to visit us every night, and I mean like 2 to 3 meters away. The Lion is a hunter, but the leopard we are a lot more careful with, as he is a opportunist, he eats what he can find.
As for your sleeping in the ground, we certainly would not take the chance!

Thanks, I will do it, question is to do it in my RV5, sleep in canopy of my bakkie or rent (buy/borrow/steal) a RTT!

Probably in RV5 with plan B in canopy if pawpaw hits the fan, need to park close enough and be able to close tail gate and door before take

RTT can also very comforting, but not nice to be trapped there for days on end (toilet needs come to mind) At least with a ground tent you can face the entrance near your car to slither over if the need arises then still be able to drive off if you wish to

Probably a complete overreaction, but I will not feel comfortable camping on the ground in Mabua.

We seem to get lucky each time we go to Mabua and have Lion sightings on every trip. We have on 3 occasions had Lions in or around our camp and have never had occasion to feel threatened or seen any behaviour that would have us worried.

My personal feeling is that I would be very worried about small children, not just from Lions but Leopards and Hyena too.

As for a ground tent and solo, I would give myself as much vision 360 deg as possible and would most definitely have fire. I have mentioned before that we have found the Mabua Lion's to be relaxed around us and have don't exhibit the same behaviour as for example the Kruger Lion's. This we do find worrying as some people will treat Mabua like a zoo and think that these Lion's are "tame" It was just 3 years ago "2015" that a lioness mauled and killed Katherine Chappell in the Lion park through an open window.

Any wild place needs to have our behaviour adapted to the surroundings. Nothing is Lion proof but we can make it safer by taking appropriate precautions.

My tip. Take a tent that will pitch under the A frame.
