Default Freelander 2 HSE Auto Gear Shift Problem

Hi guys, was wondering if someone might be able to give me a bit of guidance.

Yesterday I had noticed that my fuel tank was near empty, and upon driving it on reserve to the gas station, I noticed it had absolutely no power and refused to gear up.
    I couldn't go faster than about 40km/h...

I put in fuel and after a while it came right.

What happened there? Was this due to the fuel tank being empty for a while? Is there potentially something wrong with my gearbox?

Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much.

    Thanks so much MikeBob!
Is the car going to be ok or have I caused it damage now?
