Question Fuel from Kasane to Maun

    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum... and I don't have a 4x4... but I am planning to hire one for a trip around Botswana next August.
I read many posts on the forum and I see that there is a lot of knowledge of both the vehicles and the area here, so I thought someone may want to help me!

Part of the trip will take me from Kasane to Maun stopping 2 nights at Ihaha, 1 at Savuti, 1 and Thrid Bridge, then drive to Maun.
The vehicle I am looking at (a 2.5 l diesel Hilux) would have a 140 long range diesel tank and I know that there are no petrol stations between Kasane and Maun.
I believe that "straight driving" would be approx 500 km, I can assume around 700 with game driving to be on the safe side...

My question is if according to your experience the fuel will be sufficient to complete the journey or am I risking to get into trouble. Nominal consumption is 12l/100km but for sure slow driving in soft sand will change this figure drammatically, maybe double it?

The problem is that I was planning to rent a 4x4 from a company (Britz) that apparently does not rent nor allow jerry cans on their vehicles.
Other companies I found that will rent with jerry cans cost about double...

Any feedback will be appreciated, thank you.

    Hi and welcome,

Yes the 2.5 L diesel Hilux will make it with the 140L LR tank.
If you are lucky, the new Puma Filing station in Muchenje would be operational (Muchenje is after the Ngoma exit from Chobe) so you would have ample spare diesel.

From my own experience the Hilux is very economical even in difficult terrain.

    Good luck and have fun.

Does anyone have the status for this new Petrol Station? I am heading into Chobe/Savuti/Inyanti etc in May 2018 for a solid 15 days so keen to know if I will be able to refuel whilst there.

    thanks

I've seen it almost completed in May this year when passing through.

Visited in late September and it looked finished to me. So much so that we actually pulled in to refuel only to find its not open yet.

You will be just fine. Done that trip many times. Hilux is about the most economical 4x4 you will find. Other than the Garmin GPS download an OFFline GPS mapping app such as Maps.Me or Sygic Navigation. They’re far superior to Garmin and have pretty much all bush tracks anywhere in the world as well as city. All free

If your trip included spending more nights at each spot then I think you would be quite low on fuel by Maun. But you will have almost no time for game drives with your itinerary so I agree you will be fine.

I would carry some Jerry cans to be on the safe side and so you are not restricted to do game drives.

If Britz don't allow Jerry cans then rent from Bushlore. Their prices are just as competitive. Tell them your Britz quote and they will match it if not best it.

You our don't want to restrict your game drives because of fuel.

If you need peace of mind, why not take one 20 liter jerry can with you? Most (if not all) rental companies will be able to supply you with one.

Personally, in my drive Hilux 2.5l and 140 liters have been enough for 6 to 7 nights there.Kasane - Maun or vice versa.

Do you see any safety issues if you carry diesel in jerry can behind the d-cap? At lest diesel smells bad and for long time...

Yes it has, although it evidently occasionally runs dry.

They are having a problem with supply at the moment. No fuel as yet 1/06/18. I will let you know when they get their resupply in in case anyone is travelling this way soon.

    All the best

The fuel station got a resupply yesterday 1/06/18 so all good if you are coming up in the next few days.

    Travel safely
