    Default Foot and Mouth Outbreak

We had an outbreak of F&M here lately and all hoven animal meat products pulled from the shelves (while the Agriculture dept determines which farmer/area is the culprit) so the abattoirs have been still and unoperational for the second week this week.

What this means, is that they borders will be more sticky with regards to bringing in meat products and might affect the supply of beef/lamb etc here to you in the smaller towns. Only one or two shops in Maun have had their meat taken away and the big butcheries with better suppliers are fine and you can still buy meat.
But just be aware. Hopefully the problem will be over soon.

And the searching of vehicles is vigorous along the Sehithwa- Maun. Milk, meat not permitted.

Should have no influence on the border.

Tara's post is not clear, but I assume the outbreak is in the zone Maun falls in. So you might struggle finding meat in Maun, but it is moot anyway bacause no meat will be allowed out of that zone.

Crossing border shouldnt be a problem.

Meat pre-ordered from Maun probably WILL be a problem.

The meat might be there, but the zone will be closed. No meat out.

Currently butchers are even not allowed to sell meat to the local maun market, but they can sell it to Delta lodges beyond the buffalo fence to fly into camp. Go figure.

Luckily for me I have 2 freezers stuffed full of free range, feedlot free Ghanzi beef which I collected a month ago. All of a sudden my braai invites are popular again.

So if we buy it in Maun we are not allowed to take it to Moremi / Savuti etc...?
Other products like milk eggs etc. are they available?

I forgot to tell you... we love a good braai, haha

Theoretically you should be able to take meat from Maun to Moremi however in practice they wont allow you.

For the time being, for the individual, it's no meat in, no meat out.

No fresh milk either - long life milk is usually allowed as it's had UHT treatment.

Dont finish our meat TimmoBW plis (typing while standing by my grill with Ghanzi T-bone stake) . I saw a Beef Boys truck around Ghanzi butchery and thought maybe they were picking meat up to Maun.

Hi Guys. Just an update. We are in Maun at the moment and were informed in the delta meat deli that you cannot take meat to moremi without a vet permit. Hopefully we will find this process straight forward in Monday as we want to get to the delta as early as possible.

Meat movement permits are issued by the State vet free of charge, but I am sure you know that already If you have your slips, it should be straight forward if he is in the office.

What does that mean in practise?

Buying meat in Maun- then go to the vet office (where is it?) and then head off to Moremi?

We will be there in about three weeks...donīt think, the situation will change a lot

is it the same with going in the panhandle area?

We were in Maun Oct 3 and 4, at that time the meat was already off the shelves but found it at Beef Boys. That night heard they were taking it at the vet fence between Maun and Moremi but when we went through on Oct 5, our convoy of 8 vehicles was waved through. Seems it is not consistant. The only vet fence we were actually stopped at in 2 weeks was between Kasane and Francistown.

Any updates on availability or restrictions?

Has anyone been to Palapye or Serowe? Is meat available there?

Is it only a problem in the Maun zone?

Seems that the supplier called BMC had meat that was affected, and so anyone that was supplied by them has had their meat taken off the shelves. So what the butcheries are now doing is going to other places to get meat again and restock (but to show that it's "good"meat, they want you to have the permits as stated above, just until the foot and mouth outbreak is over and agriculture have investigated the area/farmers involved.
