    Default Amarok gearbox whine

    Hi

Just purchased a 2011 Amarok 4motion single cab 90kw with 150k on the clock last week. I noticed when driving under a little bit of throttle in 5th and 6th gear there is a whining noise, not sure if it is the gearbox, diffs or transfer case. I have been told by the dealer that this is normal for these vehicles. Is that true?

I've read some other posts on these forums about one or two people have this issue and getting VW to replace the gearbox but they never posted if that fixed the issue or not. Would to nice to know if anyone else has experienced this and if it is actually a fault or not.

    Thanks

Vw told me 90 000km ago that my gearbox has a whine and needs replacement. I did not even report or hear the whining noise. I have a slight whine when the aircon is on lately.

I purchased a 2012 4 motion single cab . When test driving in town i couldnt get passed 80km/h so didnt hear anything strange .
When i collected the vehicle i got on the highway and in 5th and 6th gear under power the whine was there .
Turned around and went back to VW .
Was a bearing in the box, 3 days of driving a polo later it was repaired and all good .

Apparently it cost them over 8k to repair so thats why they telling you its normal.
I wouldnt believe a whine to be normal and a whining diff will whine in all gears .

    Either TC or Box .

If you purchased from VW and you are still "protected" by the CPA then take it back for repairs .

I also have the same issue. The Aircon make a a slight noise when it's switched on, but only starts the noise when it has reached the temperature inside the cabin.

    Hi,

Thanks for all the feedback. I visited Baron's VW PMB and spoke to one of the service managers. He confirmed it was not normal for these vehicles. I then took it to a gearbox and transmission specialist which Baron's uses for repairs to their vehicles and took one of their mechanics for a drive. He confirmed it was definitely a gearbox issue. I then returned it to the dealership who accepted the vehicle back and refunded my deposit, so I am currently looking for another vehicle.

    Thanks
