    Default Solareff expands into green mobility through the acquisition of GridCars

    Having seen the potential for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles within the South African market, Solareff is expanding into green mobility through the acquisition of GridCars - a Pretoria based developer of electric vehicle charge point software management systems and supplier of charge points. As a leading Solar PV specialist, we are excited to be expanding into green mobility. Our investment will enable GridCars to reach critical mass and scalability required to lead the industry and roll out a network of EV charging stations across the country which will be the enabler of a carbon free transport system for South Africa.

    Internationally there is increasing interest from vehicle manufactures in developing mass-production electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Both Nissan and BMW have already released EVs to the South African market with more manufactures announcing plans to do so in 2018. There are currently over 100 charge points already installed across South Africa, and GridCars aims to dramatically increase this number in the near future to power South Africa’s Green mobility revolution. Congratulations!

    Trust you can weather it out till the SA scene is strong enough to make it financially viable.

    Thanks Charles, Chris, Eggie and Subok.

    Let's for the moment exclude the price difference between the capital cost of the EV vs a fuel powered vehicle with similar specs.

    The i3 as example consumes 13kWh/100km. If you pay R1.00 per kWh is translates to R13/100km which is equal in fuel cost to 1l/100km.

    But then many of are paying almost R2.00/kWh so then is will equal to say 2l/100km.

    But if you charge it through a Solar PV system, you could lock this "fuel" cost in with your current capex and do an LCOE over 15 years fixed at R1.60/kWh. Now the sums starts balancing.

    @Charlie:
    As for the Tesla 3 - they do intend coming to SA, but then again there are many other brands with EV's imminent in the SA market: Nissan, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, VW and Volvo to name a few. And for Tesla we'll again be a smaller right-hand drive market, so don't be surprised if we again stand last in the row.

    Thanks

    In the Cape we are on the brink of R2/kW.h ....

    So for a reseller to make money the running costs might get expensive.
