Default What is leaking here? Defender Td5

    Howzit guys,

For the past while I've been trying to find the source of this leak. I've checked the rest of the motor and it's not leaking from anywhere visible.. tappet gaskets etc. have already been replaced in the process of finding this leak.

Oil drips off the bottom of the bell housing where these bottom 2 bolts are. I took out both drain plugs, there was a little bit of an oily smear on both plugs and inside the bell housing when I put my finger in and felt around.

Is this definitely rear main seal? Are there other seals on the back of the motor as well?

I did wipe the bottom of the bell housing clean prior to taking the photo.

Does it stink like gear oil, or engine oil?

I wouldn't know the difference. Is there another way for me to check of it's engine oil or not?
When my transfer box was leaking the oil was clean (not black), I assumed the same would be for gearbox oil

The engine oil would be black.
But pull the dipstick and smell it. Gear oil has a real pungent smell.

My Disco 2 TD5 does the same.
Make sure it is not diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator then also check on the back of the cylinder head , there is a rubber grommet , almost the same as the one on the front of the head just smaller. It could also very likely be the input shaft seal on the gearbox that is leaking , if it is gear oil it will still be black as it would be cleaning the clutch dust as it runs down. Only way to tell which oil it is , is by smell.

Mine started off to be the regulator , then i did the tappet cover gasket and the small grommet which I must add is a very fiddly job on the disco.
I have cleaned the bell housing and will keep an eye on it , If there is any trace of oil after replacing those items then im afraid its rear main that has gone.

I did a bit of homework on the rear main oil seal and it seams VERY unlikely that they leak but i suppose nothing is impossible.

    cheers

Put some on your fingers, rub it, then smell it.

Gearbox oil is really nasty, diesel smells a little like paraffin, and engine oil smells, well, oily.

Thanks guys, I'm really hoping its not rear main seal because it's a bit pricey to pull the box - then there is the chance that the clutch & flywheel show signs of wear of may need to be also done which means pulling another R10k out of the hat.

Will do some cleaning/investigating tomorrow and see if I can see the source... if nothing external then I'm left with no choice but to take her in to have the box & bell housing removed for diagnosis.

A Landy that doesn't leak? I'm still looking for one.

After driving about 100km's I've checked again and cannot find the source of the leak.
It seems to only leak on the drivers side of the bell housing, and the small opening on the bottom of the bell housing is not full of oil so I'm not sure if the leak originated within the bell housing.... if this means it's not rear main seal I'll be very happy!

The oil did not really have a distinct/strong smell so am assuming it's engine oil.
Going to investigate further tomorrow and check what you guys have mentioned.

I have checked the clutch and brake master for leaks and hey seem fine, I guess I'll also be checking the lines to see if perhaps its leaking down from somewhere

    Check your tappet cover gasket.
The half-round bit at the back is in 2 different sizes and if you have the wrong gasket, it will leak.
Hopefully, the correct gasket has stopped one of my leaks...

Doesn't seem to be leaking from the tappet cover.
When taking off the rear acoustic cover I noticed the foam was soaked in oil. I've cleaned the back of the head and have left the covers off so I can hopefully see what is leaking, it is common for the rear camshaft seal to be leaking?

The front camshaft oil seal had an oily coating on it so think I should change both front and rear seals and see if this is what is causing the leak

Is there a trick when fitting these seals? Silicone?

It is the fuel pressure regulator. Been there.

I'll have a look tomorrow in the daylight, note too sure it's fuel but could be worth checking anyway.
Should it be leaking, what gets replaced - gaskets or o-rings?

I think you need to take off the acoustic cover, clean the engine really well, all over, including the block, mountings, under the turbo, you name it. You are going to chase your tail until it's properly clean ALL OVER.

Leave the acoustic cover off and drive it for about 100km then look for signs of oil leaking. If you find a leak, follow it back to source.

When I bought mine it had a leak from the joint face between the head and the cam box and from the tappet cover gasket, so you can imagine the mess.....
I fixed the tappet cover easily, but the cam box was a head-off job, and involved the purchase of the correct sealant for the job because whatever the last bloke used wasn't working.
I never did get the head to seal, so I finally bought a new AMC one and it's been trouble-free since, except that I fitted the wrong tappet cover gasket at a service and the leak took off again until remedied.
    Cheers,
    John
