Exclamation New update on Baviaans August 2017

    Hi all

Iíve been scouting this site out for a couple of weeks now as I was planning on doing a Baviaans trip. Iíve read so many conflicting threads about the conditions of the R332 from Patensie to Willmore. So I though Iím going to do the trip and give some updated and accurate information regarding the road.

I only registered on this forum to be able to provide the feedback to anybody thinking about the trip.

Vehicle used for the Road Ė 2010 Nissan X-trail (2.0l Petrol with 4x2 drive)
Buddy vehicle: 2013 Land Rover Freelander 2

To start off with, a 4x4 is NOT needed for the road, a lot might argue with it, but I didnít struggling with the road at all. Using a 4x2 on the R332 is not damaging the road unless you are a complete tool.
The only part that I might consider being ďtrickyĒ is the new paved sections on some of the uphills. And the only reason I say tricky is because you must come to a dead stop on the uphill so that you can ride over the cement section used for water run offs, and pulling away on paving on a sharp incline is clutch intensive to avoid excessive spinning. On other sections without paving, I casually climbed bit by bit at a steady pace of 10-15km/hr. just be gentle on your throttle.

From Patensie side, a normal Platkar kan go as far as bergplaas. After that, some ground clearance can come in handy even though we met up with a guy in a Nissan champ at Smitskraal having a kuier with his son. He told us he works in the area, and does gate to gate in 90minutes. (hooligan)

We had some good rainfall on Friday evening, but due to the severity of the drought, little to no impact was made in the rivers in the baviaans. Smitskraal I measured just at my knee in the deepest section I could find before driving thru. This might change if we had torrential rain for a couple of days.

For me, the worst part was near Willowmore, outside the reserve, flat continuous road for approx 100km. Gravel road was extremely corrugated, in some sections, anything above 20km was a nightmare. But an easy pace of 80km/hr can achieved safely on other sections

Distance from Patensie Gate to exit - 55.7km

The road is in a extremely good condition.

Hope this helps some of you. Please let me know if there is anything in particular you want to know.

I am planning on doing the Elandsriver road to Stytlerville on the next couple of weeks, and wil be giving feedabck on that as well.

    Regards
    Shaun

Could not agree more with the above... Most irritating part of the journey...

Another thing I agree with as well, this is no way a 4x4 route.

Yeah that section is terrible. On our way in with the bikes it felt like we might need fillings in our teeth from the corrugation in the road

Did the Elands river Road a year back with a caravan.. The road does hardly exist anymore from the tower to the river crossing. totally washed away in places. was a nightmare with the caravan (even if it is a offroad caravan) Dunno if they fixed it in the mean time. Its a highway from the river crossing on.

Did they empty the Toilets? Last time (Feb 2017) it was so full I rather watered the bushes.

    Hi Shaun

Thank you very much for your post, it is a huge help. I am planning our first family trip (wife and 9 month baby) to Baviaanskloof in the last week of September 2017. I do have a few questions and hoping does with experience can answer it. I will be driving the R332 (Willlowmore to Patensie) and no special 4x4 routes or anything. I will be driving my wife's Rav4.

    1. Do you think a 2008 Rav4 ("4x4" & central diff) will be able to "handle" the road? From the research I have done the Rav4 can handle 40cm water depth and 19 cm ground clearance)
    2. Is the road, the type of road you can ride solo?
    3. Where in the Baviaanskloof is the best place to stay?
    4. Any other tips, recommendations?

    Thank you in advance

Yes- you can easily do Baviaans in a Rv4 on your own. Any car with high clearance - no problem- Road currently in very good condition..

Kudu Khaya - Camping and chalets.

I have never been there.... Maybe a spot for my to-do list. There are so many places to stay, it is really difficult to choose where to stay. I try not to stay at the same place twice, just to experience all of the places.

I wonder what the water levels will do this week, as a lot of rain has been predicted.

I'm planning to be at the main gate from detensie side at 7:30. Maybe I'll see you on the route. Staying over at Uitspan.

Just hope I make it passed Smitskraal before that rain comes. Rest of the route will be Ok.

    Have fun!
