Default December 2 week Holiday Trip

Howzit to all of you. I would like to take the family to Cape Town in Dec. We reside in East London and I want to do a two week round about trip. I have a 4x4 trailer and a Amarok. Any suggestion where to stay. I would like to go to CT and maybe west coast and come bake Northern Cape. I'm open what you guys recommend. This will be our first camping trip.

It sounds nice to do the cape route probably the best part of our country. I personally would like to do the western cape part from Gauteng to the northern cape first through the Namaqua eco route and then down the west coast and return via the N7 or so. I think the quiet and ruggedness of the west coast is it's attraction to most people.

Hope you enjoy give some feedback when you are done.

There are quite a few trip reports on Baviaans and the West Coast on the forum, but 2 weeks is not enough time.

Having said that my suggestion is to travel through Baviaans and exit at Willowmore, then get onto the R62. There are many campsites along there and many passes to do such as Swartberg.

Campsites in the Cape Agulhas area are very nice, so you could cut back from the R62 down to there. Struisbaai apparently also good. Not much after Hermanus though.

    Couple of ideas:

    Van Stadens PE
    Ocean View PE
    Glentana
    Dwarswegstrand
    Pine Creek
    Guano Cave resort Montagu
    Waenhuiskraans
    L'agulhas
    Struisbaai
    Oewerzicht Greyton

Check out the "Caravan and Camping Resorts" web page for more details.

    Cheers

In the CapeTown area there are camp sites at Kommetjie, Noordhoek, next to Fish Hoek, and then only again near Blouberg Strand.

Under this Camping section the guys advise against some more popular resorts on the West Coast near paternoster, such as Tietiesbaai.

The bad news ..... if you plan this during the school holidays and you do not have reservations already the chances of getting a spot somewhere near the sea is zero. You will have to focus your search and planning on the interior places and than you must prepare yourself for upper 30 - mid 40 degrees of sunshine (away from the coast)
And even away from the coast you wil find that the popular places with water as a attraction, are also full or close to fully booked.
I would suggest you start by sending as many inquiries as possible to get a idea of what is available

    What pajerolover said...

    and...

If it's your first camping trip, (not sure how many people you are, kids, age etc...) consider something closer to home and maybe stay a few nights at a place at a time. A long 2 week trip for a first time camping traveler can be quite daunting.

    Just my humble opinion...

Thanks for the advice guys. Point taken. We are two adults and two children my son is 10 and my daughter is 6, so ja the terrible thing of, are we there yet is very daunting. The plan so far is to travel to Outshoorn so that the kids can see Cango Caves, the drive up to my brother in CT and stay over for 5 nights. And then most probably just drive back to East London. Maybe I should take R62. Just to day I have driven it, it's always good to stop along the rout when driving with kids. Are there allot of things to see on the R62.

    ... uhmmmm ...

LOTS to see and do in the Cape. Obviously way too much for two weeks.

    Some questions :

"coast" (by die see), or "inland", or a combination ?

Drive to a spot and park of for a few days ? Or one maybe two nights at a spot then moving on ?

    Hiking, swimming, mountain biking ?

If we have a better idea of your ideal holiday then we might be able to give better feedback.

It was already mentioned that the popular spots are booked out already. I would still recommend you try to get a spot at Onrus Caravan park.

The caravan park in the Strand is where they MAKE the South Easter ....

One or two spots in the Southern Suburbs, then you are off to Melkbos.

NOTE - now the water is getting seriously COLD.

You are close enough to do Baviaans as another trip.

It is easy to drive from PE to the Cape in a single loooonnnnng slow drive. We have done it from Addo a few times.

I would suggest trying to get a spot near Sedgfield (better distance for the first stint)

Now you can decide if you want to hug the coast, or head inland to Oudtshoorn and Route 62. MANY passes, many options .... PAst Outdshoorn to Swartbergpass then into Die Hell for a night - may well be in the mid 40's !!

Pop in at Lazy Lizzard in Prins Albert for apple pie, back to Oudsthoorn via Meiringspoort - piekniek mantjie vir die by die waterval.

    Bojaankop outside Calitsdorp ....

Every so often you are passing yet another pass to pop down to the sea.

Ronnies S3X shop is a must see outside Barrydale, possibly stay over at Warmwaterberg.

Way too many things to see in Barrydale, then Tradouwpass to Suurbraak, Buffelsjag, gravel road to "die pont". Stay on the gravel and head down to Struisbaai and Agulhas.

Now take the road to Elim, then to Gansbaai, Standford, Hermanus.

Nee magtag .. twee weke is heeltemaal te min

The big challange will be to find open spots.

Speak to REENEN on the forum. His farm is perfectly situated to be a base point for day drives to explore the Cape .....

Also Voorhoede might be an option.

Consider Mountain Breeze Caravan Park in Stellenbosch for a couple of days.

    From there you can visit

    Dozens of Wine farms...
    Franschoek Motor Museum, 28km
    Eagle encounter at Spier, 8km
Strawberry picking at Mooiberg farm stall, 1,5km
    Butterfly World, 26km
dDuck parade at Vergenoegd Wine Estate, 15km
    Church street Stellenbosch, 10km
