    Default Botswana Rookie Help needed!!

    Hi All

Firstly, I apologize in advance for anything ignorant/silly I may ask in this post!

My cousin is currently travelling solo through Namibia after which he will travel through Botswana back to SA. He is equipped with a Toyota Land cruiser with a roof top tent which we will be sharing. I am flying in to Kasane on the 29th of August to meet him. Our plan is to travel for 14 days from Kasane to Maun, where I will then fly back to SA. Our rough plan was as follows ( All Camping if possible):

    2 Nights in Kasane 29th - 31st August
3 nights in Savuti 31st Aug - 3rd September ( Was hoping for Savuti parks board camp site??)
3 nights at either of the following or near to Dijara campsite/or Tshaa (Xanagaie Campsite) or Dizhana Campsite 3 Sep - 6 Sep
    3 Nights in Moremi 6 Sep - 9 Sep

For all of the above we would like to camp in the reserves but I am slowly realizing that this is not possible as all full?

Who is the best company/booking agency to work with?

Can anyone recommend good camps close to the reserves as per the above if we cant get in to the reserves themselves?

Any help will be much appreciated

    Regards

    James Champion

You could try Botswana Footprints apparently they are very good. But seriously How did you think that looking for space less than a month in advance was going to be a good thing? You better pray for cancellations and then pray that they are in the right order of your travel plans.
    Regards,

    William

Hi Willem - Thx for the response. Was planning on just "winging it" and letting it all be part of the adventure i guess.

I have heard that you can arrive at the gates and ask them to radio in and see if there are any cancellations?

    Thanks again

Best you pre book or try and pre book your trip down from Kasane to Maun .Not likely to just rock up and find a spot .Ask Tara at botswana footprints to see what she can do to help you .

Try NDM travel agency, you have left it very late to try and book, but you may just be lucky if you are happy to take what is available.

All jokes aside, the Bots park authorities will escort you to the exit gates if they catch you camping wild and free. If the park gate control or similar stooge tells you ja, no fine, that campsite is open, and a booked customer arrives with a booking confirmation for where you are camped, be prepared to move immediately.

Outside the parks is a different story and a totally different discussion, jury still out on that.
General consensus is you still need consent and\or inform the land owner.

And no matter where you camp, leave-no-trace should always apply.

    Good luck!

    100s Thanks Rustie

I have contacted Tara from Botswana footprints and NDM with our "plans" - lets see what they come back with. We would never try "bush camp" in any reserves. I did however think that it was okay to pull off and camp just off the road if need be - i have now learnt this is not legal ( or is it?!)

Hopefully we by some miracle manage to get into some of the camp sites

    Cheers

James , like I explained in a previous thread , it is no longer legal to bush camp within a wildlife or concession area .

Welcome to the forum! We're (mostly) a nice bunch who wont tear you apart.

You've made the right step in contacting Bots Footprints and/or NDM. If anyone can help you it's them. Hope your trip comes together.

Edit: I see you joined last year...can I call it a belated welcome to the forum?

    Hi Everyone following this thread

We have managed to get a booking at 3rd bridge from the 2nd - 6th of September. We are desperate to find a campsite in Savuti for the 30th,31st and 1st. Have been told that it is chocablock full...IS anyone that is following this thread perhaps staying at Savuti on these nights hand happy for us to join you at your camp site? We are 2 cousins that will be travelling in a toyota land cruiser with a roof top tent so will not take up much space and will keep out of your hair! Although we are lekker okes !! We are happy to pay for any extras and obviously cover our per person rate.

    Thanks all
