I was thinking of backing off on my Renault hatred recently. Until Wednesday when I saw another one broken on the road side with a poor human next to it with his head in disbelief...

Well my 2nd hand french car is going very well, slight electronic glitches but not worth a head ache.

There's no doubt that they've built some hateful cars in the past. But so has every other manufacturer. The Scenic we had was full of electrical issues & all the interior door handles fell off & couldn't be fixed properly.

But I do think they've turned the corner & are making some great cars that work.

Today I saw an Opel at the side of the road with the bonnet up, but my impression isn't that they are bad cars. Then there's another marque that I saw with the bonnet up on Tuesday or Wednesday, but I'm not allowed to mention what it was.

Seeing a car on the side of the road means very little as there can be so many reasons why it got stranded.
I still like French cars, but we did have awful experience with Peugeot 307 and its automatic gearbox.
Now days if I buy French I get old Citroens or old Peugeot.

I still like the RCZ but wished it had more powerful engine.

Maybe he was admiring the beautiful engine, you know like all the Alfa owners you always see next to the road looking at their engines.

At least Ford still has a badge, even if it is oval. Who buys a R600K car with vinyl stickers. A JEEP vinyl sticker that peels off in the carwash is not a badge.

Back on topic, the wheel keeps on turning. Just like nations get their own chance at being the great civilizations, so to do the car manufacturers.

Pity I had to suffer my adult life through Toyotas chance, looking forward to a new era. Anything will do.

Let me spew forth the normal Forum drivel when anyone quotes sales figures:

    - So what if Renault/Nissan sold more, doesn't mean they vehicles are any good. The sold less Bentley's are you saying a Clio is better than a Bentley?

    - They sell more Black Labels than Craft beers - just sayin'.

    - So what is the OP trying to say? What point does sales volumes prove?

    - Ja, but this is Renault/Nissan/Dacia & infinity (& the Merc Xerox Class) combined.

    - Renault/Nissan clearly used advertising power to force the journalist to write this rubbish.

    - High volumes don't indicate quality (meaning Toyota quality has improved 2 places in 6 years).

    Blah... blah... blah...

Renault was way ahead of other manufacturers on comfort and secret glove boxes etc. Their petrol engines were good, electrics an issue.

I have a 1999 2.0 l scenic, 8 valve, 290k km on the clock, most reliable car I have ever had..Still goes like a bomb, no oil usage and is comfy to drive.
Also a 2006 scenic, water gets into the harness inside the chassis, that causes all the elec issues. Its got 190k km on it, still goes like a bomb..I expect it to die soon though, being a "new modern, 16 valve engine"

I also have a td5 and a 2016 Ford Ranger 2.2.....I still prefer the 290K Km Renault, much more reliable and comfy...

The OP's not trying to say anything, merely pointing out a fact.

But sales volumes do actually say something. They say how a product is more or less desirable than the other products. And the reasons are many, and extremely complex. Not just perceived quality.

    - Ja, but this is Renault/Nissan/Dacia & infinity (& the Merc Xerox Class) combined.

mm - Explain how Merc X Class has contributed to the figures please.

Toyota Motor Company. Toyotas, Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu, Subaru and Hino.

    ----------------

I would say that the Nissan/ Renault alliance has a MUCH SMALLER range of cars than the Toyota group.

Toyota Brand alone has 68 distinct models presently IN PRODUCTION worldwide. That's not variants, that models, so eg Corolla counts as 1 model, not 10 or 20 or 30 as we have in SA.

    ---------------

Manny, like it or not, the wheel is turning, and I for one look forward to a normalized car industry in SA where a car is just a car. So if my next car is a Toyota product (which it most probably will be), my decision will be based on merit, not the smoke and mirrors and hype that the sheep keep on bleating.

    Fluffy you missed my point.

    Maybe I wasn't overly clear.

My post was a jibe at the normal Forum drivel that is posted whenever someone quotes sales figures.

So my post was a parody.

I was poking fun at the responses others make on other Threads about sales volumes.

The views in my post were not my views but the views of others who post similar views on other Threads relating to sales volumes.

    Default Klip in die bos!

I've owned a Renault 9 way back and later a Peugeot 406 V6. Both gave me very good service. The Peugeot I've owned at the same time as a Hilux KZTE and the Hilux had more niggles than the Peugeot! The Hilux sold at 117000kms because I just had enough. The Peugeot at 150000kms! I've replaced the Peugeot with a Passat Tdi and the new Passat had more ratlles as the Peugeot!

I think French cars are generally not the most practical in the South African context. But so is low profile tyres!

Give credit where it is due - Consider application. I would anytime drive a Volvo or Renault in Europe - but the SA context make it not the best buy.

I have owned a Modus, Megane and a Laguna.

Loved the Laguna to bits, best platkar that I have ever owned. Wrote it off on 150000km.

Megane was good, sold it on 140000.

The modus was crap! Spares and part stupid expensive and a crap drive. Could not wait to sell it. Got peanuts for it as well.
