And once again the LR police at at it again...please do not let a handfull of "experts" spoil this agian...

Firstly, here are the stats on D4 vehicles sold from 2009 - 2016...Please ask all the experts here warning you to show stats of how many of these D4, have had engine failures and not just hearsay again, and again, and again.

Also interesting topic on this same forum about Toyota motors failing, but not much on those threads warning people... talk to real D4 owners and make up your own mind....

    http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...o-engine-blown

There is not much out there that compares with a Diesel D4.... Good luck.

Oh, almost forgot a well respected Indies response on another thread that may shed some light on the Crank Police versions of warnings....

"This is not news but history.
In all of my previous posts I have clearly stated that JLR purchased the sole rights of the SDV6 SDV8 motors from 2012 when the supply contract ended with Ford. These motor were manufactured by JLR originally in the Jaguar engine plant at Bridge End Wales and now moved to the new engine plant in Wolverhampton. Since Jaguar Land Rover took over the manufacture of these motors which includes the 2.7 subs
they incorporated the bearing tabs and correctly rock welled crankshaft journals.

Yet You and a whole lot of other naysayers have advocated that 2014, 2015 and even 2016 motors have had bearing seizure.
But you can never prove or will never be able to prove the cause, because those vehicles were all under moto plan and JLR would never disclose the reasons. Any combustion motor in this world can never run with out oil and it has been a fact of the Honeywell Garret turbo has prematurely failed and sucked all or most of the oil out of the sump.

Why would a motor manufacturing co soon to dominate 20% or the world market share invest millions of pounds launching the new Discovery using that very same engine in their flagship and also in the new Rang Rover Sports and Velar, Does that make monetary sense to you and the naysayers."

Fact of the matter is that the D3 and D4 is bought by the upper income group. They then sell it before it causes problems, like after 4 years and buy a new one. Then the middle to lower income group buys the Disco 2nd hand, those that can't afford R150000 repair bills. If and when it blows the middle to lower income guy that bought is screwed.
Or something like that. I am low-lower income group so I don't buy these cars.

There is. The Grand Cherokee with the Merc/Fiat 3.0 V6 CRD. It's got a sterling reputation.
This opens an interesting debate, if one could ignore the LR engine problem. My perception is that the GC is more a boulevard cruiser while the Disco is well established off road. Has anyone owned both?

I keep hearing about the crank failure and R150k repairs for the D4, so...could one just not purchase the D4 and replace the crank before failure if they indeed had such a bad failure reputation?
I'm certain it'll be way under the R150k if it's a scheduled repair versus a snap, "bend valves and blow sensors" failure.

Yes you could. But why would you opt for this over a nice Pajero?

I suppose some have their heart set on a certain model for a specific reason.
Yet I hear some who have many smiles with their Disco, not snap crackle pop crank!!

Some people have unprotected sex & don't get HIV. But it does increase the odds.

I've had a GC and now have a Commander. The boulevard cruiser comment is rubbish. I did the entire Moegatle trail in the Commander before I lifted it, and on dead standard road tyres.

The GC took me to Guinjata Bay in Moz on a trip with a Pajero and Patrol, and neither one could come close playing in the dunes.

Think what is meant here is every post about a discovery steers down to crankshaft failure, but land rover is not the only one with recurring problems, hence the refrence to the post about prado

But, it is completely irrelevant? Someone mentioned Pajero. Surely quoting a recurring problem with Pajero's would be more relevant?
