Default should I get this discovery 4?

    Hi All,

I am seriously thinking of getting this 2012 discovery 4 sdv6 HSE model from imperial select in randburg

    http://www.autotrader.co.za/used-car...GVzYy9zZWFyY2g

and so far all looks good. The services have been done regularly according to the book by Auto Niche in George. (I tried to contact them but their number is out of service) did a look up on google and see they are/were a land rover dealer.

The overall condition of the car is good and only warnings are the battery on key fob is low, but I dont know other than to look at warnings what else I can see.

I also contacted land rover Constantia kloof and gave them vin number and they said no major repairs logged that they could see, just routine maintenance.

I tried to check as much as I could regarding the vehicle in terms on functions etc but did not try anything offroad.

Can anyone shed any more light on the vehicle I am looking at? They also offered a 2 year unlimited km warranty included in the deal.

one thing I am not sure of, is that they say it has 8 gears but it has the stick gear lever and I understand that is 6 gears?

    Thanks very much.

Let me not start with the doomsday stuff, but rather try and give constructive advise.

When buying a luxury, premium vehicle, that 5 years ago was close to a million rand, remember that when/if/should it break/s, it also requires a luxury/premium amount of money to fix it. Check carefully what your warranty will include, and values that it will pay out. IE, on diesels, stuff like HPFP's tend to go, and can be costly.

Do the research on the engine failures of these vehicles, and know what you are getting yourself into.

There is nothing special about the deal - looks like an average price for the year, milage and model. It is probably the 6 speed and not the 8 speed introduced later in 2012. It would be interesting to know your strategy for dealing with unexpected and potentially expensive, maintenance costs.

Stick is 6 speed without a doubt. 8 speed has a rotary selector.

    Hi all,

    thanks for the quick feedback.

I think the best thing I can do right now is to get Walter from LRExtreme to stick it onto diagnostics or maybe landyworx can help but not sure who to contact there. It will give me more piece of mind that there are no current faults with the car and possibly urgent issues to deal with.

Yes I understand the cost of maintenance having had a jeep grand cherokee for the last 8 years, maintenance is certainly not cheap. It now has 263000 kms on the clock and will cost some money to resolve the niggles.

My strategy for unexpected costs, will be get what I can from the warranty, (I doubt it will be much for R7k) and fund the rest from my pocket. On a positive note I have a lot of faith in Walter and know I'm not doing to be fleeced.

    Thanks again

I got very good service from Lehan at autoexcellence in Centurion. Give him a call to double check on pricing and other offers available. 065 169 3143
I bough my LR4 XS from them 2 weeks ago and after a small hickup on fetching it they actually delivered it free of charge 250km from Pretoria.

Fantastic vehicle when it works. If you can survive a sudden R150k dent to your cash flow, then go for it. If you can't, then don't go for it. Sorry, but that's the reality.

    thanks DiscoFrans,

that sounds like a good idea. I have seen the service book itself as the car is in randburg and the workshop stamps are all intact and complete. I would like to contact the workshop that did the work and verify the details, but their telephone is out of service. Not sure if that is permanently or temporarily.

I managed to get hold of Jonathan at Landyworx but they are booked for the next 4 days, so I am taking the vehicle to Walter tomorrow for the diagnostics. Lets see what transpires

I suggest you look at the warranty in detail and upgrade it to something more comprehensive if the cover is too limited.

Diagnostics won't tell you if the engine is about to implode. Heed the advice of others here, you need R150K lying around because there's a relatively high chance that you will need it. Relatively speaking. Basically there's a chance higher than some are willing to take. Some others are willing to take the chance man. See what I'm saying, no, neither do I.

Hi. It would seem to be a good deal to me. Ive just traded my 2010 TDV6 SE in at LR and received R300K so a 2012 HSE at R350K sounds good to me. You are doing your checks on the car throughly and despite the documented issues it is a fantastic car. I hope that you are purchasing one of the many good ones.

    Good luck and enjoy

I agree 100%, but Mudslide will only know if he bought a good or a bad one when it drops a crank. And that's where the problem lies, you only find out when it's too late. Full service history etc. etc is unfortunately no guarantee.
