Default Grand Cherokee CRD - Difficult starting

I have a 2009 Grand Cherokee CRD overland and have noticed the last 2-3 months, the starting is not as responsive as it used to be. It used to start chop-chop, now it turns a few times before it starts. What could be the cause?
I only drive it about 1once a week to get some dop & a tjop, and don't drive more than 7k's roundtrip. Only once a month or two do I travel more than 50km's
Could short distance driving be the culprit?

    Thanks

If its when the engines cold?

Most likely your glowplugs are dying and or your glow plug controller.

Busy with the same issue at the moment, once a little heat is in the engine start right up no issues.

Agree, glowplug controller or some of the glowplugs are on their way out. You can actually measure their resistance, it should be low I think it's less than one ohm.

I just went through the same thing and had new glow plugs and controller fitted by Bulli, now it starts first turn and fuel consumption improved.

If you are in the Joburg/Pretoria area give him a shout. He is also on the forum

Thumbs up Re: Grand Cherokee CRD - Difficult starting

    Hi,
    thanks for the replies.
It only happens when cold & after not being started for a few (5+) days.
Starts perfectly when warm, also starts first time when started withing a day.
Car only has 52,000k's - can glowplugs go that soon?

    I forgot to add:
Could it have something to do with the fuel filter, I think I read somewhere that short distance driving is not good for the fuel filter?

    Thanks.

I've changed the glow plug controller and glow plugs and I'm still getting a hard start in the mornings.

Once it runs for a bit and gets some heat, it start first time.

Cold start comes with a big cloud of smoke, so I think it is fueling fine.

Only error i'm getting now is crank position sensor. But I suspect that is because of the engine swinging without starting - there is a note that this could lead to that fault code.

    Also do relatively infrequent drives.

    Any ideas?

Check your battery voltage : the new GC likes a nice 12.6v before it starts.

New theory - fuel pressure solenoid.

Apparently these can begin allowing some fuel past when standing, which means that at next start, there is a temporary lack of fuel.

Going to run some tests to check this theory.

Start with the easy things. Air entering the fuel system. Broken or leaking fuel pipes.

No, the issue was not that serious. But I had it in for a service last week, now it's really bad, very difficult starting and sound like a misfire for the first second or so.
The fuel pressure solenoid a previous poster indicated sounds like the culprit.
    I'll have that checked out.

So to close the loop on my problem. It was a faulty new glow plug controller (low voltage being supplied), once that was swopped out for another one everything started up just fine.

Seems like a fairly expensive fix, a replacement Glow Plug Controller comes to 110USD for just the part, excl shipping on RockAuto=roughly R1500. Did you get the part locally?

My RockAuto part was the one that was faulty or incorrect voltage (i'm still not sure). Ended up getting one at Goldwagen. It's a Mercedes part.

Luckily my aftermarket warranty covered some of it.

Its not cheap, but should be good now for another 10 years and 150 000km

What was the cost of the glow plug controller?
