During the lockdown I did some small mods on little things on the Cruisers. Stuff that I always wanted to do but for some silly reason always postponed doing it.

Since the 76 arrived I always had this thing about the rear bumper. Had a look at every available one but none of them appeals to me.
The 76 have a fairly short overhang at the back but the bumper sticks out a good 200mm. The plastic corners of the OEM bumper have took some knocks on trails like Donkerpoort, Road to Hell and Berakha.

Before Road to Hell I were about to buy Onca or Gobi-X, as luck would have it both were out of stock. Today after doing more serious stuff with the 76 I am glad that I did not buy one. None of the aftermarket ones would do what I expect of them to do. The Lockdown gave me time to rethink, taking measurements and plan.

The plan is to build one myself with little overhang, two spare carriers, better side protection and some other nice goodies.

I think I know what you want to do... Can I post some pics of what I think you have in mind? The bumper is currently on a bakkie, but works very well.

Peter I have done a lot of reading on the Grenadier. To be honest I cannot find one reason why I should own one. It still have to proof itself. Land Cruisers have proven themselves over 69 years. Think I will play safe an stay with the Cruisers for now.

Cymot told me they don't have comebacks the Outback Extreme spare wheel arms as in the case of the Gobi-X.

we also had issues with the gobi-x on the 76, arms keep coming loose where they fit into the bumper and need to be re-tightened after each trip. Problem is it starts to get play and then causes so much movement on the gravel that the whole bumper ends up shaking loose.

no experience with the other brands.

for that reason we used corolla rear wheel hubs when built my swing arm mountings on the 105, not very slim-line or pretty but they don't come loose.

I have a Stofpad rear bumper on the 79. Like Uys`s idea using brass bushes. Have done several trips on real bad roads and the spare wheel carrier is a sturdy as day one.

Would like to get the spare off the door on the 76. The hinges and door locks takes a hammering on bad roads.

Must say the Corolla hubs sounds like a good idea
