Had the opportunity to test the Cruiser fully load with a double rooftop tent on a dirt road again this past weekend.
Cannot believe the difference with the rear spacers fitted. Very satisfied with ia gravel travel abilities now.

So we took the Cruiser to Whooopa. Did the Waterford route on Tuesday. With the lockers in it was able to crawl most of the dunes on the route. The v8 have nice torque permit you does not ask serious torque below 1500rpm. As I am used to the Yank Ranger I stalled it a few times when labouring below 1000rpm. I need to adjust my driving style. Did a few pull aways halfway up dunes that really impressed.

The Ranger had a failed wheel bearing so I decided to go back home to source parts early Wednesday morning. Left Boegoeberg at 4:30 arrived in Kathu 6:50. Load some tools and left BMG at 8.30 back in Boegoe at 11:45 with two quick stops n Groblershoop.
Covered about 580km in and out. Traveling mostly gravel I could test the Cruisers gravel travel at good speed.
It took the bad gravel road quite well and I am satisfied with its handling. Only thing I did not like was the way ABS kicked in.
This again can be contributed to my driving style. I like to touch the brakes before a sharp turn to loosen the tail a little to take corners at speed. Every time I tried this the ABS kicked in.

The run to Kathu and back with the Waterford route included turned out 5.5km/l. With Swambo at the wheel at a steady 80 to 100 on the dirt we saw 7.3 on Monday.

Cruiser is solid with no rattles even on the worst corrugated sections. We bought the Cruiser to do gravel travel as its main function as our gravel roads are getting worst by the day.

Will soon start with some mods and will keep you updated.

Yes the Cruiser even qualified me for Dos Sete Diablos up against the Long dune.

    Lekker Oom Christo.

ABS...well dont like it either, you can always bypass the ABS with the handbrake just before the turn...

For some time now I want to take off the intercooler to measure the engine intakes as well as intercooler inlet and outlets. Made templates of the engine intakes.
I believe allot can be done to improve airflow.

While at it I made a stainless plank for the EGR.

Plan to install a front mount intercooler. The radiator have about 80mm that it can move closer to the engine.

Set myself a target to improve power to 180kw and about 550nm without chip tuning.

    3. Steel Rims and 33" tyres.
    4. Free flow exhaust system.
    5. Intercooler.
    6. Speedo correction after the 33`s.

The D4D v8 have a very poor intake system with the turbo boost to intercooler a smaller diameter hose than a 2.0l VW TDI engine.
Also very tiny outlets to engine intake from Intercooler.
My motive is not more power but better engine efficiency, Which in the end will increase the power.
I am sure with some hard mechanical mods that you will come very close to a chipped engine.
Except from power increase an easier breathing engine will score on consumption.

Still got the Yank Ranger to satisfy my Horse Power urge.
Post 55. On to it since we own the Cruiser. Think most of the homework done now to start doing things.

So the V8 used a little bit of oil, about 500ml per 1000km Started to look at the oil specs. Toyota uses a Toyota branded 10W30 oil. For top ups you need oil from the dealer. According to the Cruiser owners manual it actually needs 15W40 oil in our environment.

With the Cruiser approaching 40 000km I have decided to do the service myself. All my other engines runs on Dello 400. The Guru`s from the Cruiser Club also recommended Dello 400. Yes I know I kicked the warranty but pay for services with the wrong grade of oil is not inline with my way of doing things.

Cruisers are really easy to service and you can see it were build with the idea of servicing it in the bush. One of the reasons for buying the Cruiser the no nonsense design. Have covered more than 2000km since the service. The good news no need for oil top up. Still on the mark as serviced. Keeping inmind that we have just completed a West Coast trip with lots of 4x4.

Really enjoyed the Cruiser on the trip. Love the low down grunt of the diesel v8.
