Default Hartbroken, an Indie murdered my Shorty

I have a long sop story to share with the aim to prevent someone else getting burnt.

Way back when I was contemplating what to replace my Jeep with I was told here on the forum that you would have to try very hard to kill a Paj 3.8 Shorty. They are bullet proof.

So when Shorty coughed one morning, I came back here and again got solid feedback about some Indie in Centurion that calls himself a MITSubishi PROfessional.

After 3 weeks, a couple of run ins due to half truths, misleading info and R 38 000 hard earned cash, I was told Shorty will give me at least another hundred thousand trouble free k's as the engine was now virtually brand new.

The very next week Shorty didn't sound all that well and I sent him back to the Mr Pro Snr to check if all is well. Shorty was sent home with a clean bill of health.

Here is where my heartbreak starts, just about a month with 480km since the rebuild disaster strikes and I'm left next to the road.

I just could not trust these guys any more so I sent Shorty to someone I could trust that I have met here on the forum. I contracted him do do some work in Africa and he did a stunning job.

We could not believe what we discovered:

Metal particles in the combustion chamber.

Loose bolts at the adapter plate

Bolts falling out causing major damage

The devastating part is to take on this Indie just don't make economic sense.

The good news is that Shorty can be made as good as new again. I will be sharing this journey in the hope that enough people see the warning to take EXTREME care who you trust with your beloved 4x4

But now, how do you know who to trust? My old 2.8 T/D Colt of 17 years need some work, nothing major, but I would like to take it to someone I can trust who won't over charge me. I don't want to do the work for a bargain but also don't want a rip off.

I am so sorry to hear this. I also had issues with said supplier and have not used them since. Maybe consider dropping in an import.

Needless to state the obvious here but surely their workmanship is under some line of warranty - not that you want to take it back to these guys but you have some rights to ensure they fix at no costs what they stated they repaired in the first place ?

Jip, that is what I thought until I had a consultation with the Legal Eagles. That cost me a G and the advice: Legal costs will be more than you can get PLUS some info about the financial state of said person.

Could someone chime in as to what could cause those bearings to do that and for the piston to get damaged. I would also think after 480km the cylinders wouldnt have time to gunge up so quick.

When you assemble a rebuilt engine it is good practice to use a decent assembly lube, this is like a heavy lubricant almost like a grease designed to stop dry start damage. That looks all to similar to dry startup combined with oil ports not cleaned properly.

Piston damage like that normally points to lean running but in this case there is pitting on the piston crown indicating hard foreign materials in the piston, probably some of the steel bits shown. I seriously doubt that the pistons were changed or that the cylinders were bored or even just honed but..............it is obvious that the rings have been changed........they are the wrong ones for the pajero, those are for the dodge. Look at the oil rings and you can clearly see that they are too thin an obvious mistake that was just ignored. The bearings were also replaced but the crank was not even polished, for what its worth a hone done by a motor engineer would cost no more than R400 and a crank polish and check would be in the same ball park, well worth the effort. I suspect that they tried to do a ring and bearing change and call it an overhaul and charge accordingly.

@ Zapiture The oil pump looks new but do change the waterpump it is a service item with a cambelt change and that one is due.

I have used Pajero & Colt Maintenance Services in Wonderboom. Nothing major done but happy with both service and charge.

A proper rebuild with the engine in the car is not possible. You will not be able to clean the oil channels from the grid left by honing.

But then I have learned that many see a ring and bearing replacement as an overhaul.
It is not what you buy its what you build.
