    Default Kaa area: Botswana

I just managed to get a booking for Nossob at the new campsites for next April.

We're planning to take the route via Kang down to Hukuntsi and then past Zutswha Pan to the Kaa Gate and into the Kgalagadi.

    Can anyone give info on:

    1. Road conditions from Hukuntsi?
    2. Places to camp between Hukuntsi and Kaa? Probably 2 nights and where/who to book/pay?
    3. Entry times or documentation formalities at Kaa gate?

    Thanks

I can recommend to look for this site [NAME Pan], payment in Zutshwe.

Been there some time back and I don't know the conditions, but its a nice location in the wild.
Entry formalities at Kaa gate as at any other gates, show reservations for camp site, pay park entry fee and go.

we did this trip Polentswa to Kang (kalahari lodge) April this year towing a trailer. Polentswa to Nossob is approx 64km. Sand track Polentswa to Zutswha slow going but quite easy and pretty. Similar fuel consumption. You book and pay for camping site on arrival at Kaa Gate entry point. Polentswa to Kaa Gate - 4 1/4 hrs @19.5 ltr/100km, Kaa Gate to Zutshwa 2 1/2 hrs, Zutswha to Kalahari Lodge Kang 2 hrs. Recap - Polentswa to Kang 9 hrs.

Some clarification please. Do you not have to book in advance for sites in the Kaa area?

We recently stayed at Swartpan in the kaa area and I highly recommend this but please book so that there are no problems with double bookings. We had booked a year in advance and when we arrived the gate had allowed someone else who arrived that day without a booking to stay in our sites......
We drove from Nossob to Swartpan in one day so its possible but long..... left at 7am and got there at 6h30pm but we had awesome lion sightings on the way and a lunch stop.\

Agree Rossmacg- Swart Pan is very nice indeed - quite with not many animals though - but beautiful and tranquil. You will need to book in advance for Swart Pan though

    Hi ubbo just returned yesterday,
Road from Hakuntsi to Zutswa nice hard gravel Road.
Take KD2 Road from there too Kaa gate, camp at Name pan (P100pp, P50p vehicle) bit expensive but nice. Kaa area very nice now but lack of water holes, view animals, Swartpan though with waterhole very nice. Return to Zutswa via cut line, 30 km longer but we had very nice lion sightings in this raad.

Alwynvdw, Xisbo and Rossmacg, we are interested in planning a trip "Polentswa - Kaa -Swartpan" next year around this time.
Do any of you have a nice trip report of those areas you can share.? Looks like you all were there lately.
Any info on planning a trip to visit that area would help if you are willing to share.
Or enter from Kang and exit via Polentswa, any trip plan.
    Thanks
    Hennie / Carin

From Kang to Hukuntsi is 108 km nice tarred road. New Puma garage at Hukuntsi with 50 ppn diesel as well. From Hukuntsi to Zutshwa is 30 km gravel road. From Zuthshwa to KAA gate is 72 two track road but it is easy and very scenic. Besides other places mentioned you can also sleep at KAA gate. I suggest you book though.

It is about 54 km from Swartpan to Gnus Gnus. Here and there loose sand. Lots of branches that will scratch a lot if you tow someting big. Almost about two hours. Must tell you that Gnus Gnus is not close as nice as Swartpan. Swartpan has a water hole and a nice view. Lots of bees at Gnus Gnus and no game (Except two jackal early morning) or view.

Been north of the mabuasehube KAA cutline in June/July 2018 school holiday. This whole area is part of the KD2 consession. From KAA to Zutswa the road is tweespoor and a bit sandy. Nothing to worry about though. There are two pans close to the road that can serve as stopover. The one closest to Zutswa is Name Pan. I believe it is about 25km from Zutswa if I am not mistaken. The other one is called Jeff Morris Pan. It is about halfway from Name Pan towards Kaa. It is to the south of Zutswa Kaa road. Don't know if it is well sign posted. It is on the tracks for africa map. There are nice sites next to the pan and also a big dune with a great viewpoint at the top where you can see for miles. It is only a couple of kilometeres from the "main Road". You can keep going south with this road and in the next 30km you will find 3 more Pans where you can camp. Peach and Bushy Pan. Total distance from Jeff Morris to south is about 45km. In the south you meet up with the Kaa Mabuasehube cutline. Great camping if you dont want to see anybody else. Absalutely beautifull but very remote. Only thing there is a pan and a little sign with a picture of a tent on it. Saw lots of big cat tracks. Only saw one very big leopard. Road is obviously not being used that often so it is a bit overgrown. But not to bad. Don't let a couple of scrathes prevent you from experiencing something very special.

    Hi to all!

Are you allowed to travel from Mabua to Kaa along the cutline?

You are allowed to travel along the cutline from Mabua to Kaa. From Mabua the road goes north towards Hukuntzi. This is the border of the Mabuasehube park. After about 40km the road turns left (west). After another +-15km it turns right (north) again and continue towards Hukuntzi. This is a normal gravel road. You just keep going straight (west) along the nothern border of the Mabua Kgalagadi. This is now only a "cutline" road. Keep going for a long long way and you reach Kaa.
