Default General Grabber AT VS AT3

    Hi all,

I would like to know the main differences between the two tyres, I assume the AT3 is the latest tyre by GG, so is it the obvious choice to go for between the two?

    thanks.

I believe that AT3 are quieter on the road... but not sure how quiet.

I need to replace my super quiet Michelin LTX AT2 tires, and was considering the AT3. But I think it is probably safest to stick with the Michelin - the Pajero really transfers tire noise to the cabin

So do you still get both the old AT as well as the AT3, or is the AT3 the replacement?

I have had 2 sets of G/G AT's, first on my Jeep which I sold, I then bought a Fortuner and fitted it with the same, I have now replaced them with AT3's
I find the AT3's are quieter on tar and the car feels more planted at speed, I have only done about 20 km of 4x4 driving with them so cant comment as yet, but the grip was good

yes you can still get both AT's & AT3's, but not sure if that is down to them clearing stock or if both tires are still being produced

Just clearing stock, only AT3 will be produced by General Tyre. I also have some deciding to do, still have about 12000km left on my tyres and was planning on replacing them with General Grabbers AT but now they are discontinuing and I don't know if I should buy and store in garage for 6 months to a year?

Or then buy the AT3's which don't look as nice?

I loved the AT2 on my Ranger but the 3 is now the exact same tread pattern as the Conti Cross Contacts. They will eventually be impossible to stay aligned and will cause steering shudder. I've been through 2 sets of the Contis on new Rangers. They've messed up with the tread change.

I fitted ATs last year, and found them just as quiet as the road biased Hankooks I had before, in fact, I cn barely hear them. I'm busy trying to get tyres as quiet as this one for a FL2.

I'm amazed that it is possible for the AT3 to be even more quiet.

This is what starts happening to the Grabber AT3/Cross Contact tread pattern, as a result of forcing itself out of alignment. You're forced to do alignment, balancing and rotation every 5000km if you want the tyres to last and not shake the wheel to bits.

Current set of Conti's on my current Ranger

Set of Conti's on my previous Ranger (pic from 2014) - these were replaced with Grabber AT2's which were miles better.

I see the treads are similar but not the same, have you had any experience with the AT3 or are you basing this purely on your experience on the Conti Cross Contact? Also how many km's have those tyres seen and what sort of terrain are you driving?

    Thanks.

I agree, there are some similarities in the tread patern but definitely not the same so to prejudge and say they will have the same issues as the Conti's is perhaps a bit prematured?

Yes, you guys are 100% correct. Sorry man, I hadn't paid that close attention to the tread pattern until you've mentioned it. I saw them (AT3's) stacked up on a workshop floor the other day and they struck me as the same as the Conti's.
I really loved my Grabber AT's, I hope the AT3's don't have any issues like the conti's then, I'm currently in the market for new tyres (as can be seen from the condition of my current ones) and that's what got me trawling the forums again, trying to catch up with tyre opinions. I wonder if trying the AT3's is going to be worth it then?

Well, I have decided to give it a shot, have ordered 4 will be fitted next week.

Good friend of mine has a tyre shop and he recommended it above the Wranglers so I trusted his word!

Fair enough, I'm going to phone my tyre contact now and see what I can get.
    What size and price Blackie?

If you're looking for a quiet tire, definitely consider the Michelin LTX AT2.

I just got a price of R1650.00 each for the AT3's, 265/65/17's. I think a that price, I'll try them out.
