Thumbs up KZN North Coast Road-Trip advice please

    Good day Ladies and Gents
SWAMBO and I are looking to do a short (two week) road trip from Durban up the North coast to Kosi Bay. Any advice on campsites to visit along the way (and those to ignore) would be highly appreciated.
Historical sites, game reserves and pristine beaches are on our wishlist - your experiences would help greatly to determine the route... Many thanks in advance !!

Dolphin Holiday Resort in Ballito is very nice.

Hluhluwe/Imfolozi park is always worth a visit and St Lucia as well.

We stayed at Bonamanzi Game Park over Easter weekend and enjoyed the peace and quiet, we stayed at one of the private stands which is a bit secluded an away from the other campsites.

We haven't been to Kosi Bay for quite a while but it is nice to visit the lakes and snorkel at the mouth.

Once in Kosi area, suggest you meet up at Shemula lodge and camp there by Oom Ernie (Shemula on this forum) - nice and close to Tembe Elephant Park and not too far from Kosi (approx. 45km).

If you are looking for pristine beaches, then definitely Black Rock is the one in my books. Totally unspoilt and stunning.

Sugarloaf campsite at St. Lucia was great a few years ago, can't comment now though.

Emdoneni Lodge is a cat rehabilitation place en route to St. Lucia and is on my to do list.

Kosi is awesome. I really like St Lucia, as you are very close to
    Cape Vidal
    St Lucia
    Hshuluwe/Umfolozi

Sodwana is also very nice, but pretty much a diving and fishing destination.

There is also Jozini Dam if you are up near Kosi.

Are you going to have a boat or just a vehicle?

Then there is Mkuze as well in that neck of the woods.

i think the north coast of KZN is the best place in the world. Pity there are so many socio economic issues but still the most beautiful area.

    Robin, a question or two

    1) you are leaving from Durban and going back to Durban?
    2) How long do you like staying at a place?
    3) What do you enjoy doing? Fishing/ photography/ game drives etc..
    4) How far inland do you want to go - for instance is Ithala on your possible list?

    Have look at Doornkraal.
Rustic no power, open air showers.

    We enjoyed it.

Go read thread http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ead.php/227381 from #17, our experience at Ithala

Also have a look at Bushbaby lodge close to Hluhluwe

Remember that there is no camping at Hluhluwe-Imfolosi. You can say in the tented camp at Mpila, or 2-sleeper chalets. Vidal
is very nice, never had a bad time there.

I'm driving down to Sodwana on Saturday morning for a week. We've arranged a boat trip in St Lucia for Sunday and a visit to Tembe Elephant Park on Tuesday. Wednesday we're driving up to Kosi bay via Lake Sibaya and Mabibi. Just cant wait anymore.

Sounds like an awesome trip. Hope you enjoy it. Just remember there is a lot of petty crime in the area so make sure you look after your belongings. I sure you will have a great time

Drove down on Saturday and found we were put in a different unit. Disgusting state. We had to overnight there and then moved to Crafters Lodge, but the first place really ruined our holiday, not to mention the owner, she was really unsympathetic towards the state of the unit.
Well we drove back on Monday and decided to rather go to Clarens for the rest of our holiday.

It really is a pity that our first impression of Sodwana is not a giod one at all.
Sodwana View Holiday H will never see me again. Really disgusting. Just look at the state of the bedding

Pity they messed up. There is no excuse for poor service these days and in the world of instant social media, word travels at lightening speed.

We stayed in the parks board chalets and it was great.

Clarence is also nice though so I hope you managed to salvage the trip
