I note that many of the younger and more adventurous members take exception to some of the censure dished out to our intrepid videographer. Some critics have been rather harsh and they have been labelled as "suurgate".

There are at least three sides to every story. Consider that ultimately it is the members of a public forum that set the tone of that forum (despite the moderators diligence) and it is not unreasonable that they express their view when it is perceived that the ethics of their favorite 4x4 forum are being tested. Or even worse, that posts may lead less experienced readers to find themselves in danger.

I think that a degree of risk is part of the African bush adventure. Without any risk there can be no adventure. The older and more experienced bush travelers usually become more risk adverse as they learn from their own mistakes and probably most often from the mistakes of others. Younger members often think they are bullet proof and relish living more on the edge. It is as well to remember that we were all young, inexperienced and full of bulls..t at some stage.

At the end of the day any behavior should stand up to the reasonable person test. One should be considerate in one's behavior and be self-critical about the impression given by the contents of trip reports and posts. Consider how you might be affecting others, either directly or even indirectly. Immoderate behavior could result in regulations adversely affecting our privileged access to the bush. Over time I have had to help others out of trouble and will continue to do so. However my tolerance for stupidity and high-risk behavior has become abraded, especially when those in trouble show little appreciation of the inconvenience, expense and even personal risk my help involves.

There has been an element of grand-standing in the videos posted and even the captions have appeared to be sensation seeking - "Almost died twice in Moremi". On the other hand it would be a pity if the comments on this thread inhibited any to post such videos. It would be great if the possible effect and impression created by such threads would be more carefully considered. This is not so much about the content but rather involves the manner in which the experience is put across. The African bush is a harsh mistress and can be very unforgiving towards those shopping for sensation or disaster. Fortunately in this case it appears that the lesson has been learnt via a severe blow to the wallet and nothing more sensational.

    Nice video!

    Sorry about all the damage.

Excellent scene with the ellies and the lightning strike!!

I've also had the privilege of observing a running pack of wild dogs in the Moremi for close to 5km as we trailed behind them a 100m or so on our way back to camp, presumably hunting. Awesome animals.

    Keep it up!

Did the inverter turned out to be ok?

Stunning clips. As good as I have ever watched. Been there, done it all. Now this makes me want to go straight back. Excellent commentary too.
