Default Steering play -Jeep cherokee XJ diesel

Considering purchasing an 1998 Jeep XJ, diesel (Mazda engine converted).
Only issue was on the test drive there was a bit of play on the steering wheel.
Is this a deal breaker? Is it difficult/expensive to fix?

A 1998 XJ will have steering play. Usually ball joints on the tie rod ends, or draglink. Not expensive.

The real question is how well was the conversion done, that could cause more trouble.

There are a bunch of XJ fanatics down in CT.
